I've been reading up on this for some time and today received the HVR4000 and Jaycar kit. Clearly I was a bit naive - as I had assumed the Jaycar kit would come assembled! While I know my way around computers well, assembling that all looks a bit daunting. Does anyone have any tips or leads that might helpo me get started - e.g reference guides, links, (or a built one they want to sell at a premium!!) ;-)

The Jaycar kit is a bot more versatile tha most others available. It can be used as an internal or external. I recommend biting the bullet, dusting open the soldering iron and having a sixpack of Beam and coke handy.
Do a search for Jaycar Pheonix in this forum before you start building. It'll solve some problems before you have them.
You put your own together, it'll be a lot more satisfying than buying one.
And, if it doesn't appeal, I have a probee I haven't used yet you can have for what I paid for it. Plus postage.
It sounds like you might be pulling throught the inband schedule data. Try turning it off in BSE (Disable Inband Schedule) - or words to that effect.
You might also try turning it off in Media Center: tasks/settings/tv/guide/edit channels/select the channel from the list/edit listings.
I had to then go and manually assign the listings to each channel. Use a keyboard as they tend to be right at the bottom of the list and typing the first few letters will take you there direct (they're probably after a 1000 or so of blank channels).
Cheers for the offer. While I'm always keen to learn new tricks (as it were) - with 2 small kids I might be pushing my luck a bit with my wife. Excuse my ignorance, but what's the 'probee'?

Sorry, that's progbee. It's an external phoenix card reader/write with serial and usb connections. The usb is only to power the unit.
To disable the inband, do I need to use the BSE reset first?

TrevorIvory: Re disabling the inband - I'm not 100% sure. You may well be able to get away without resetting - there's no harm in trying it without first.
If you don't have any luck you can then simply reset and try again.
You shouldn't need to do the reset. Just click the disable inband on the front page of BSE and select the channels as required. As TrevorIvory says you can also do it within MC but you have to do it channel by channel - very tedious. Unfortunately you also need to go through and assign the correct data for each channel one by one. Again as TrevorIvory says use a keyboard and type the first 1 or 2 letters of the channel name to find it quicker. You'll usually have 2 entries for each channel and to use the "other" one just select the listing without a channel number beside it. You could also have a go at using guide tool from the DVBLogic guys ( http://1geek1tool.com/guidetool ). I haven't really bothered with it myself but you may want to have a look...
just thought i would share my findings with newcs on ubuntu. the version of newcs im running is 1.50, the first thing i noticed when i switched to using ubuntu from xppro was the dcw update times, they were 100ms less than previously on xp, hence reducing the chance of a glitch when ecm's change and dcw's update every 10secs, this would be very usefull for people using a pc based solution to watch sky. I gave up tho using my SkyStar2 dvb-s card and bought myself a dreambox with built-in hdd for recording, seems much more reliable for me. On my dreambox im using mgcamd as a newcs client and it also seems to buffer the streams a bit reducing possible glitching so ive noticed, and whats even better is mgcamd seems to update the skycard! ie i call sky and i ask for the movie package, then at the same time i tune to a movie channel, the screen comes to life as soon as the sky cust rep enables the movie chans. I can confirm this 100% I havent returned my skycard to the skydecoder for a month now, going to wait and see if mgcamd can really keep the card alive and updated, will post back on my findings. However theres no pc based newcs client that i know of which will update the card, and you also have to have autoupdate enabled in newcs for it to work.

Got it all working. Still only one sat card. I'm having issues with the screen freezing up. It seems to happen when I go into the Recorded TV folder. Also, when I reboot, I get an "Unknown Card" in NewCS. When I stop DVBlink and DVBViewer services then restart them, it works.
