What issues are you having with the HTPC? They can't do everything, but are the closest I've seen without spending large $$$$..

AV Reciever: Pioneer VSX-1018
Speakers: Klipsch synergy range F-2 Floorstands, S-2 surrounds, B-2 rear surrounds, C-2 centre, Sub 10.

Issues getting HD audio off blurays out from a HTPC is basically what is holding me back. Especially when I'd like to do the HD audio decoding within the HTPC and pass out the basic LPCM signal to a dumb receiver. Last I checked you couldn't do this via HTPC's as HD audio can only be sent via hdmi and this angle just wasn't supported yet.

It can be done with the Asus HDAV1.3 deluxe or the HometheatreHD from Auzentech (Thats outputting to 7.1 analogue if that is what you are after). Pretty expensive though!

1TB myFreeView ~$700, HTPC with TunerCards and enough Video processing horse power to actually produce HD with minimal artefacting, ~$1400

True, if you just look at the TV tuner side of things it doesn't make much sense. My HTPC is a 1 stop shop (for me at least) though. Bluray/HDDVD player, gaming machine, I can record as many shows as I want on TV at the same time (freeview Sat and SBS), music etc etc.

I think it only makes sense if you're planning on using it for a range of activites. A playstation 3 and 1TB myfreeview could do a lot of the things most people would need them for. But I like having everything in the one box and its all usable from a single front end.

Damn only small time compared to some of these but my current setup is

Uniden 37" LCD $600
Homecast 500gig HD Freeview Decoder (WTG Wellington Freeview Pizza Night much loved) $0
Panasonic SA PT460 Home Theatre system. $260
Xbox 360 60 gig Pro System (soon to be upgraded to the new wireless N slim elite) $400

Plus my Quad core PC sits up there as well as running HTPC setup.

I'm very happy and have to say price was good too as all up this cost me $2160

Probably true for digital audio out, and SPDIF doesn't have the bandwidth for uncompressed HDAudio anyway. Full-rate analog output is supposedly supported in PDVD for some onboard audio. Although I have an ALC889, I can't say I have seen this actually work.
