No Dolby Vision with Samsungs  from what I can see. Many say DV doesn't do anything vs regular HDR but I cannot measure it, it feels so much better when the DV banner pops up on movies and Netflix etc.

Is Dolby Vision a thing on downloaded movies (in the 1gb range) from lets say alternative sites?

I am in the market for a new 75-77" TV but it has been years since I looked at them so am completely out of the loop when it comes to the different technologies.

I don't want a flagship model, I am not prepared to pay >$10K for a TV that will be worth half that in a year or so!

So last years models are fine. I run everything thru a Kodi box (OSMC Vero) so I am not interested in any "smart" features. And all audio is played thru my Yamaha AVR with 5.1 speakers, so audio/speakers on the TV are also not a factor.

I just want a good panel that will last. I see HN has some pretty good specials on some older models by the looks of it.

https://www.harveynorman.co.nz/tv-and-audio/televisions/lg-75-qned86-mini-led-smart-4k-qned-tv.html

I have done some reading on the differences between QNED vs OLED but TBH it is hard to get a clear picture (excuse the pun) of what is best and what really matters.

I know others have recommended the LG G3 in this thread, but it looks like they are no longer available, with the G4 now in stock and costing over $12K!!

Any tips, suggestions or advice would be great.

I don't want to spend much more than $4K so I am looking at those specials from HN and "hoping" one of them is worth pulling the trigger on...

I was in your position last year. I had a 15 year old Sony develop a fault.  I went for a mid range 55 inch Panasonic OLED, and importantly, the previous years model. Basically $2500 delivered.

I spent the first month in awe of the picture quality (and haven’t watched any 4K content yet), and even some months later are still occasionally taken with what I’m seeing.

best of luck 🙏

Steve

We're very happy with the Samsung 55" S90C we bought in the Boxing Day sales. PB Tech have it for a good price ATM.

Samsung S0C PBTech

We went out with the intention of buying an LG C3 but came home with the S90C.

Good range of features and apps, supports casting from your phone/tablet.

It's running with a Yamaha RX-V6A using HDMI e-ARC. The TV remote does everything so far as it goes for watching TV, turns on the AVR, controls volume etc.

At the $4k mark you'll have two choices..

75-77" screen with an average LED panel or a 65" OLED smaller but much better PQ.

The main question is do you want size or picture quality? FWIW $6,000 to $7,000 will get you a 77" OLED with the best of both

Yep I am starting to realise that now I have done some more research.

I currently have a 65" so definitely want the upgrade in size (we just built a new house and the wall it will be going will suit a bigger panel).

And from everything I have read, OLED is really the only way to go.

PBTech have one more of the LG C3 77" left, at $6.9K. What is the difference between the G and C series?

Looking to replace our 6 year old veon that has developed a red strip down the middle.

The Samsung 65" Q80C is $2000 at JBHIFI at the moment, while the Sony 65" X90L is $2500 (but the sales person said they can knock a couple of hundred off).

Usage.

We don't have any subscriptions (netflix/disney/etc) instead everything goes through kodi on a mii box which reads off a local server with most content being mp4s and most content being 720/1080p content.  We don't game through it but would look at getting a second xbox in a year or so.

The other factor is there is a wall of west facing windows to the left and so the current (Veon) screen has quite a bit of reflection.

I know both of these would be a massive step up from what we have but would the extra couple of hundred be worth it for the Sony? or should we look at going for a lower model as we don't actually watch any 4k content, and we don't watch any sport / or game much?

If it was my money i'd go with the Sony. Sonys picture processing is regarded as the best in the industry.

main difference is brightness and reflection handling  - if you have a bright room, the brighter the OLED can go the better.

C3 on left column  vs G3 right column.

I went to HN during easter sales to compare both C3 & G3 and only got as far as the G3. $3890 for 65"

OLED not your only option - mini LED is also an option.

Unless its a super bright room the C3 will be fine. Great TV at that price

Thanks for that feedback - yeah $7K is a bit more than I was hoping to spend but it sounds like a good panel.

Plus I want to integrate with Home Assistant and after doing some research LG is far better than Samsung in this regard.

Now just to convince the financial controller this is a worthwhile investment...

Definitely not.

However, on anything 65" - 77"+ OLEDs as discussed here, I find it hard to imagine watching 1gb movies on any of these suggested TVs!

Mini-LED (I've only been looking at the Samsung range) seems a better bang-for-buck than the OLEDs.

You can 'go up a size' for the same money - and get a much brighter picture (for a real world room).

Perhaps a different story if you have a dedicated AV cave - but for non-dark-room viewing... ?

I've had a nice 65" OLED Panasonic for 6 years for movies - and a 50" LED Q80 for 2 years (kitchen).
My tired old eyes are happy with them both.
One is better than the other, but content & convenience count too.

I'd like to swap out the 65" for an 85" - with up-to-date apps (and, obviously, more immersion).

I've been looking seriously for a few days now - and I'm blown away by the price jumping.
Spread-sheeting the usual suspects, just on the Sammy 65"/75"/77"/85" models:
LEDs (Q60/70/80), mini-LEDs (QN90/95C) & the OLEDs (S90/95C),
the prices have been moving 3 times in 24 hours by up to 1500 $NZ.

I know it's 2023 model-year run-out season, but it's truly wild.

Just found the 77" C3 at JB HiFi for $5991 incl. free delivery!

Pulled the trigger as don't think I will get a better deal than that anytime soon.

Delivery in two weeks...

It'll certainly be a step up from my old Panny 65" LED...
