Bugger. Our 12 yo Samsung died tonight. Screen went blue then just disappeared from the bottom up like it was some sci-fi movie ending! Very dramatic.

So do I need to read through this entire thread or is there a TLDR suggestion of a top three?

I want no more than 55", 4K, I have a new ChromeTV thing to handle all the media, and old Apple TV I'll probably decommision, no speakers anymore so maybe a soundbar.

It will be on a bright, sunny room doing TV, lots of football, some movies, some casting, etc. We don't need cinema quality but I'm always prepared to pay for quality.

Any suggestions?

12 years isn’t bad for the Samsung. I has a Sony last 15 years and was happy with that!

I went for the mid-range Panasonic OLED buying the 2022 model (TH-55LZ1500Z) for a good price (~$2600) in August 2023 when the new model had been released and was going for north of $3000. I’d done some homework and good things were said about the panel on that model. I don’t care about sound as I have a Home Theatre setup.

i have a fairly bright room, and there can be some reflection on sunny days, though my room has the only windows coming in from the side of the TV itself. Compared to my previous TV, I was just stunned at the quality of picture. Stunned. A year on, still occasionally stunned.

So, (not sure if I should tell you this bit 🤔), in April this year, the TV I initially brought faulted; basically worked fine, but shut itself down occasionally. I raised this with Panasonic NZ, and they were nothing short of excellent, almost immediately agreeing to replace the set (with in fact the 2023 version).

So I guess faults can occur, and these days tend to show up early; it’s rare but it does happen. I’d still recommend the Panasonic.

Good Luck

Steve

In the 55" space I'd recommend any OLED from LG, Sammy, Panasonic or Sony.

Look at:

Panasonic Z85 OLED 55" around $2,800

Sony XR80 OLED 55" around $3,200

Samsung S90D OLED around $3,500

I know you said 55" but NL has a deal on the 65" Panasonic OLED for $2,995 https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/p/panasonic-65-inch-z85-oled-4k-hdr-smart-tv-with-fire-os/N230885.html

Panasonic 65GZ1000, Onkyo RZ730, Atmos 5.1.2, AppleTV 4K, Nest Mini's, PS5, PS3, MacbookPro, iPad Pro, Apple watch SE2, iPhone 15+

The LG C4 or Samsung S90D seem to be the reviewers TV's of choice.

I'm a little torn on the size though. Our current TV is 49/50 and we've always said we didn't want a TV to dominate the room.

We sit 3m from the screen and 65 would fill the nook it will sit in. I'm just thinking that's going to be too big.

LG C4 or G4, depending on budget.

Only go with Samsung if there is no chance anyone or anything will touch the tv haha

I get that whether the TV dominates a room from an aesthetic consideration comes down very much to personal preference, so that's a call you need to make. But I don't think you'll find the image too large from a viewing perspective, given your viewing distance.

We're at 3.5-4m and I could quite easily cope with a larger screen than the 65" we currently have (and as the room is set up as an HT, the aesthetics/room dominance isn't an issue). I'm sure we'll go somewhat larger next TV (though large OLEDs are still so expensive...)

This Rtings calculator suggests a 70" screen is ideal for viewing at 3m https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-relationship.

Nobody ever wished their TV was smaller.

You're conflating two things here: there's the aesthetics of the room perspective, where some people find a large black box on the wall dominating and ugly, vs the viewing experience. The OP was clear it was the latter they were worried about (to quote: 'dominate the room').

And, anyway, I'm pretty sure some of those who splashed out big bucks in the '90s for (relatively) enormous rear projection TVs displaying SD content were disappointed from both an aesthetic AND picture quality perspective!

I give you 7 days. Buy the 65 inch and for the first 7 days you’ll enter the room and think “gee that’s a big TV”. After 7 days you won’t even notice it.

The new Panasonic OLED range seems to have been getting excellent reviews.

There is even one here on GZ https://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=27067

I saw a couple of overseas reviews before this NZ review and they all agreed on the same good points.

While I am still using a Panny plasma (2009 vintage), the things that would push me towards their new OLED range are:

  • I have heard good stories about their local support over the years
  • They have started using the Amazon Fire TV OS (I have been using Fire Sticks for a while and found them better than the chromecast with Google TV sticks).
  • The audio is apparently excellent - seems often mentioned that for most people you wouldnt need to worry about soundbars etc
  • I gather it is not the thinnest model on the market, so they managed to include good Technics tuned audio

I've mocked up two templates for the 55 and 65 and I've done the old trick of putting up the 65 first.

If SWMBO doesnt complain about the size then I think I'm in.

Its a know fact that TVs shrink over time once they are removed from their box.

Nice TV, (I have the G3) , just be aware there have been some issues with the HDMI2 port on the G4. Supposedly sofware related https://www.avsforum.com/threads/lg-oled-g4-hdmi2-issues-beware.3299142/ so should be fixed with a OTA update. Hopefuly you got a good one.

What discount did they give? 65''?
