Shindig:

What are peoples thoughts regarding TCL TVs?

Consider how many hours a day you devote sitting in front of your TV.

Consider how many years you expect, would like it to last.

Definitely the very last device I would consider cheapening out on.

(ps. If the question is TV, the answer is Panasonic).

Not anymore. Panasonic wants to get out of TVs and I doubt they are investing in R&D like other brands.

TCL and Hisense are what LG and Samsung were 15 years ago. You get a lot of TV for the money and their higher end sets are measurably excellent.

I guess this is where we differ. If I’m going to sit on average in front of my telly for, say 3 hours a day, and expect around 8 years of use (to pick some numbers), that’s pretty close to 9,000 hours of my life sitting in front of that beast. I don’t want a lot of TV for the money, I want the best TV for money.

You may be right about the long run future for Panasonic, but at the moment they still make outstanding TVs. My Panny OLED is 5 years into life, but a friend purchased a new Panasonic OLED a few months ago and the picture quality of their new set is outstanding (personal opinion).

What is the best? Contrast ratio, inky blacks, brightness, size, operating system?

Most people have a budget and have to make compromises. If you have a room that suits TCL or Hisense they make some really excellent TVs

Panasonic aren’t significantly better than many other manufacturers in any class they make TVs in and have a pretty limited range. They are nice enough TVs but positioning them as clearly the best is pretty erroneous.

Your “Panasonic” OLED is an LG panel with Panasonic electronics and plastic around it. It’s nothing significantly better than OLEDs from a number of other manufacturers but has a worse app ecosystem and a parent company who is probably going to abandon its smart features.

None of that may be a problem for you but for some other people it is. Blanket statements like the one you made are just wrong, it’s very situation dependent.

I've had a few brands over the years, Panasonic, Sony, LG and Samsung. LG OLED definitely is the best complete package.

Just beacuse they left some markets doesn't mean they are wanting out of TV's, In fact this year they released TV's back into the US market.

Panasonic and LG are currently the two best OLED brands period.

News sites were saying the same thing in 2019 when I purchased my GZ.

This is a public disclosure to investors by the president of Panasonic not “news sites” speculating. Public companies don’t do that unless they are going to make significant changes.

My mate and I are really finding it difficult to hone in on that sweet spot TV.

How much should we take rTings reviews into account. First off some of the models are for the US market only. Secondly for example the LG C4, people say it's a really good TV that ticks all the boxes, but rTings score it 7.4 in sports. I can't actually find what that 7.4 really denotes to and if it's acceptable or one would notice a difference.

I love my tech research, but trying to nail down a TV feels like an endless task. With buyers regret at the end.

Have you gone and taken a look at the TV playing sports? In the end a lot of this is fairly subjective and it really comes down to whether you like the TV yourself and it is pleasing to you.

On the RTings ratings they show how they make them up. Next to the score is a question mark. If you hover over that you can see how they weight the score. In the case of the C4 it has the OLED achilles heal of relatively low brightness and reflections which may well not be an issue for you due to your room or use case

What do you do for apps not available on LG WebOS, just get a streaming device like Google TV streamer/Apple TV etc like an older non smart TV?
