doesn't the remote have an up and down button to select channels without the number?

deviat: Had mine installed yesterday and so far have recorded 3 movies and about 3 TV Shows.  It's working like a charm.

One issue that cropped up is channel surfing using the channel number.  Now you need 3 numbers to get to the correct channel.  ie if you want channel 3 you need to type in 003 where the old box would accept just 3 and switch channels.

Still picture quailty via HDMI is excellent on the HD channels and now I can finally watch my 4:3 content in 14:49 rather than stretched 4:3 which drove me up the wall!

Yep, but it is hell of a lot of button pushing to get from Channel 1 up to say BBC news on Channel 93 ( or down below 1 through all the foreign, porn, music, PPV etc channels to get there)

I personally have a touch screen learning remote ' pronto' which get rid of all my HT remotes all together.
Then you can (in my case) have one touch tv logo icons to press to channel surf.
No more entering 3 digits or trying to surf crap channels using the up and down buttons. Just the ones I like.
Not to mention it dims my room lights as well !!

Has anyone tried to get multiroom by running a HDMI splitter to the second room? Does this work? If so what equipment did you use?

Of course it does, but going from channel 1 to channel 71 is a bit of a stretch don't you think.

My MySky HDi was installed in the last hour...installer was great and seemed to know his stuff, more than me anyway. Took him about 20mins with my help. Interestingly he said that him and his fellow installers got a text message from SKY on Monday telling them to start installing. He said that got no real training other than a DVD a few weeks ago.

Everything seems to be working well and the cricket in HD is awesome. TV3 looks great too and in fact every channel seems to have seen a quality increase.

This morning I bought a digital optical cable so as to get the HD programming in 5.1 audio...at the moment everything still seems to be in stereo. However the background music in setup mode is definitely 5.1...???

Anyone else having the same problem? I'm 90% sure I have all the settings correct. Any help appreciated as I am certainly no tech genius.

msb5: Have to agree the rugby last night was very sharp and CSI was crystal clear

Question - probably for Cyril - is it possible for SKY to up the bit rates that a channel is broadcast at for certain events? The All Blacks game on Saturday seems to be the thing most early adopters are looking forward to - I imagine SKY wants this game to be the absolute best they can to showcase the benefits of HD - so can they up the bitrates that this is broadcast at - or is it just a fixed range for the channel

by nature all digital content varies in bit rate, firstly it depends on what the source was given to the TV company at.  Secondly the broadcaster can then recompress that down to less (as Sky often do).

Stuff on Sky Sport (SD) can now go as high as 4.5-5 MB/s, but I have often seen stuff at about 2.5, depending on what the programming is.  I don't know about HD, as I don't have any MPEG4 DVB-S tuners.

The rugby looked really nice last night, I think it was in HD.  Be interesting to see how the AB's game looks.

That's mbits/s, of course, not MB/s....

Out of interest, has anyone with a gold 17xx card upgraded? Did they keep the same card for HDi?

Hi,

I had MyskyHDi installed today. I was a bit concerned as the picture didn't look that different after the installer left. Also I found my old Mysky no longer received TV3 SS1 or SS2.

I spoke to Sky who advised they would need to send a technician back to invesigate but not until 9th August.

After contemplating the problem I decided to swap the Mysky cards over and hey presto the missing channels came back on the Mysky and MySkyHD pictures suddenly became much better.

I now notice that the channel descriptors say TV3 HD Skysports HD etc.

Just something else to consider if all does not look right.

My brother tried to get 720p, 1080i on his Samsung over component, but because his TV does not have HDCP it would not accept the HD signal. Seems like TV's that are HD capable and slightly older without HDMI must have HDCP to get the HD from MySky. Is there a work around?

Yes, But ......
(note there are other ways if you do a little searching, some of which are valid).

As the article points out....this device and ones like it could be invalidated if the HDMI Forum decide to push their "shiny-red-button" called key revocation.

Still , given the long odds of that in the short term they could be a good investment if you have a non-hdcp display.

So they had your SD box pointed to the HD stream and your HD box pointed to the SD stream?

Yes thats right so the SD box lost all the channels that were in HD. Points at a different mux I assume.
The HD box still received all channels but only in SD.

Without wanting to take this thread off track as I am sure there are better threads for discussing this in (I'm new here so haven't had a good look around), but there are ways to overcome all the issues if you want.

Imagine if you will:  A device that has one HDMI in and 2 out. Input connects to source, Output connects to a legitimate HDCP device (you can buy many types for a few hundred dollars), the second feed goes to a non HDCP device. The unit allows normal hadshaking whilst sniffing, then assumes takes over and allows HDCP to pass for legitimate device but passes compromised stream to non HDCP device. Red button could never stop it as the unit never has compromised keys.

Search for "HDCP spoofing" or "HDMI HDCP HACK" if you want further reading (note ensure you have good Viri protection if you get off the mainstream sites as many less public sites have waiting malicious code!!!).

Heres a C&P from a legitimate paper by researchers at Univeristy of California at Berkeley.

Abstract

We describe a practical attack on the High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) scheme. HDCP is a proposed identity-based cryptosystem for use over the Digital Visual Interface bus, a consumer video bus used in digital VCRs, camcorders, and personal computers. Public/private key pairs are assigned to devices by a trusted authority, which possesses a master secret. If an attacker can recover 40 public/private key pairs that span the module of public keys, then the authority's master secret can be recovered in a few seconds. With the master secret, an attacker can eavesdrop on communications between any two devices and can spoof any device, both in real time. Additionally, the attacker can produce new key pairs not on any key revocation list. Thus the attacker can completely usurp the trusted authority's power. Furthermore, the protocol is still insecure even if all devices' keys are signed by the central authority.

NOTE: In my opinion, it would be cheaper to simply sell the non HDCP screen to somebody who does not require that feature and buy a new one with HDCP, with the likely bonus of extra features and better PQ, rather than invest in ways to overcome the HDCP problem.
