Pretty poor show by Bose, but an increasingly common behavior sadly - one that is only going to get worse unless people vote with their wallets.

I suppose you at least needed to have installed the app for this data leaking to happen, but still...

I'm gonna side track and insert my [happy for my wallet] piece.

Found nirvana in a pair of Audeze LCD 2 (fazor version). Perfect rendition of everything in the (my) hearing range, and the lush mids that make you wet. Trouble was, it was heavy - the weight on the headband made my head hurt. The screens were right on my ears, making them hurt. And I had to be so obsessed about keeping them after use because it was so precious. 

Bought a cheap ATH M50 - recessed mids, more comfortable (less head- and ear-ache), chucked them anywhere I wanted. Because I could just pick them up and wear them wherever (bed, kitchen, plane etc) I didn't use the Audeze and so I sold them! It was like breaking up! 1/10th the price of the Audeze

Found Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80Ohm on special. WOW. recessed mids, but just about perfect bass and treble (for me). But they are so comfortable. No weight pain of the headband. Plenty of space for my ears. No pain anywhere yet. Better soundstage than the Audeze. Also 1/10th the price of the Audeze.

Still miss the lush mids of my ex. Miss the way it can make you wet. But you have to choose between a sensible girl that understands you vs that sophisticated baby that is just not meant to be yours.

I had some 770-80's a few years ago. I found the bass far too strong and the mids too weak. I have some DT 770 reviews up here.

I prefer the Audio Technica A900. They're quite large and don't look that robust, but they've lasted a long time for me. They've very light.

Brilliant phones. Now got to shift my Bose ones!

We are Farmlands shareholders and NL are usually very good to Farmlands cardholders.

The retail was $699 and it was discounted to $482.

What makes it better than the Bose? Well, of course better is a subjective term.

It seems better for noise cancelling every day (although I have only the QC25 not the wireless 35) and reviews are evenly split with most saying it is so  close as to be virtually indistinguishable and a few falling in favour of one or the other. Certainly it seems more effective to me, although I have not flown wearing them yet.

It has better ambient noise capability: if you cup the right ear cup with your hand, the music goes really quiet, the noise cancelling ceases and the microphones let it the outside world. Good for listening to boarding announcements etc.

It also has better amplification built in than Bose does I suspect - and, with appropriate Sony products - LDAC codec for HD Audio. Personally I prefer the sound balance as well.

It also has some clever software that can analyse the fit of the headphones and adjust the noise cancelling accordingly, for example if you wear glasses and there is an imperfect seal around the eyewear.

I would not have paid $699 for them (saw them for $1100 before Christmas!) but the price I paid was more than reasonable I think.

From the many comparison reviews I have seen, the Sony are preferred for sound signature, plus have more options for controlling ambient noise. Extra bonus - the Sony's aren't listening in on you and sending the info back to home base!

Geektastic - how is the physical size of the Sony's compared to the Bose? Are the swipe controls easy to use - some reviewers say they can be problematic?

I would say that the Sony headphones beat the Bose ones on all fronts but it's not as if the difference is like that in a drag race between a McLaren and a Ford Fiesta.

The sound is better - especially if you have a Sony device equipped with the LDAC option which is extremely good. Even with normal BT AptX I prefer the Sony presentation, but that is of course a matter of personal taste. I've not tried the cable (which is silver plated OFC - quite high end for a product like this) but have read some reviews that say the sound is even better wired, although the touch controls do not work when in wired mode.

Re touch controls; no problem. Maybe a few times as you get the hang of it, but not long term. Handy, actually.

Size wise not much to tell between them really. Sony build quality feels better - more high end.

Speaking of the Sony MDR-1000x, keep an eye out for the next JB Hi fi Friends and Familys night (cost + GST + 10%). Picked up a pair for $380 which was an absolute steal in my books!
