ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968) has been removed from the JBNZ website. I asked the JB buyer why it had disappeared. His reply :

"unfortunately I had to take it down as the supplier ran out of stock before we could get any. Only managed to get one copy through and used that for rating. Hopefully more back soon, and I will put back up."

Welcome to the Weekly 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray & SteelBook Release Schedule for Thursday May 16.

The good news this week, is that JBNZ will have a limited number of Disney+ TV Series SteelBooks; WandaVision, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor, all releasing on May 29. This is welcome news for local collector's and Kevin Lock (JBNZ's Physical Media Buyer) is working on importing several more titles. He has also imported some Arrow Video titles which are mainly to be found in selected stores, however, 12 Monkeys can be ordered online. The first of Kevin's US imports... True Lies, was released yesterday, with The Abyss coming next Wednesday. One last thing; There is now a Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire SteelBook Edition added to JBNZ website.

Coming to NZ cinemas on May 23rd, Pre-theatrical release reviews for FURIOSA: A Mad Max Saga are pouring in and it looks like it's going to be a massive hit for Warner Bros. and a must-have for Home Cinema nerds.

Most major reviewers are around 90+/100, with IGN giving it 10/10 and Empire Magazine online 5/5. This film will demand a 4K SteelBook release around my birthday in late August 😀

I don't know about you guys, but I keep unintentionally finding a lot of reports of a movie physical media renaissance when I'm web browsing. DVD, Blu-ray and more importantly for people in this thread... 4K Ultra HD. It's not surprising, given that the music industry is showing an upsurge in Vinyl records and even cassettes.

It seems that people are becoming disenchanted with streaming services and their continual licensing agreements being cancelled. Also major streamers like iTunes/Apple TV don't always give the user what a disc can offer. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X the pinnacle in Home Cinema audio, is often not included. DTS is always down mixed to Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 on Apple's platform. Apparently a simple software update could fix this and allow for bit streaming on the Apple TV 4K media box. Maybe Apple are saving this for a future Apple TV 4K model.

Many films (in NZ) on iTunes/Apple TV don't have 4K Dolby Vision/HDR10+/HDR10 such as The Beekeeper and others. Maybe it will be upgraded when the film is released on 4K Ultra HD media soon. Studios which have movies on the Apple system, have learned that they can charge exorbitant prices because their digital releases are available usually a month to six weeks before the physical release. When the physical media is released, the price of the digital release drops to the normal streaming prices.

It's great to see film director's such as Christopher Nolan, pushing physical media and making sure that collector's are getting a great product for their money. I love this quote from Chris... “We put a lot of care and attention into the Blu-ray version [which you can] put on a shelf so no evil streaming service can come steal it from you”. 😁

I find that browsing for, and finding a title in 4K that you want/need, is a big part of collecting disc based films. It's "the thrill of the chase" so to speak. My "Man Cave" consists of bookcases full of SteelBooks, Blu-ray, 4K and memorabilia and the walls are covered in movie posters. Added to that, my Desktop Computer also resides there. I just about live in there (my wife would agree). Let's hope that the "renaissance" continues to gather momentum and we can look forward to collecting for years to come.
