Yeah I hope you're right about a bit of a renaissance for physical media. I've always had a predilection for collecting things and I love movies so it was an easy sell for me lol.

We'll see what happens, it's hard to see the big picture without sales numbers and costs; hopefully the studios continue to support it and we can carve out a little niche.. I don't think it will ever get back to the glory days where DVD releases were on par with the cinema release in terms of $$ (according to Matt Damon on that Hot Wings youtube video - check it out). It does seem like we're getting a lot of re-releases on 4K of older stuff which is fantastic.. and yes +1 for more concert films on 4K!

I have cut back my streaming services; there is too many and they're getting pricey..

Let's see your posters (hopefully not against the rules or anything, I'm new here) :)

I've got some original daybills that are some of my most prized possessions! The Warriors and Taxi Driver, in particular

Also, bit more on topic, did not realise JB Hifi NZ were stocking Queen Live Aid/Montreal 4K! Will have to grab that next payday. Would love to see more concert films in 4K

Well, I don't have any valuable posters like yours. I buy the tin/metal posters from Temu, plus my framed poster is changed to a different poster every month or so. Unfortunately, my Man Cave is not very large, so I can't display as much as I would like. I'm working on my wife letting me hang some framed movie posters in the hallway (not much of a chance of that though).

Thanks for the heads up on the Queen release. I completely missed it. I did have to search to find it after reading your post. I'll put it up in the thread once I've finished this post.

Apologies for missing this release. Another of Karl's imports, I assume.

JBNZ May 10th [$64.99]

QUEEN ROCK MONTREAL + LIVE AID

Queen Rock Montreal captures the world's most iconic rock band at the very peak of their live powers. Recorded in 1981 and recently released as a record-breaking digitally restored IMAX concert film, this landmark moment in the band's history is now being released as both double Blu-ray and double 4K Blu-ray packages, plus double CD and triple vinyl packages. Both come May 10th the band has announced.

Queen Rock Montreal presents Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon at their most exciting and exhilarating. As Brian May puts it, this is Queen "live and dangerous."

Queen were on all-conquering form when they returned to Montreal, Canada for the fourth time in November 1981 to play two huge concerts at the 18,000-seat Forum.

The original concerts, which took place on November 24 and 25, 1981, were truly ground-breaking. They were arranged specifically to be filmed for a full-length concert film to document their live show. Director Saul Swimmer planned to shoot them using state-of-the-art Double Anamorphic 35mm footage, which allowed it to be projected on a gigantic, five-storey high screen. Backstage tensions between the members of Queen and Swimmer could have caused problems, but instead they propelled the band to new heights.

Mercury Studios:

4K HDR10

Dolby Atmos/Dolby True HD 7.1/DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1/LPCM 2.0

JBNZ also have the Blu-ray Package [$46.99] Triple Vinyl Package [$126.98] and the Double CD Package [$36.98].

Movieman:

It seems that people are becoming disenchanted with streaming services and their continual licensing agreements being cancelled.

Not even that, but the way the licences are set up in the first place. Some people at work were having a grizzle just yesterday that they can go to any music streaming service and get virtually any music, but that none of the video streaming services have anywhere near a complete collection of video. "I want to watch A and B. Which service has both of those? None of them."

The MAD MAX: Fury Road SteelBook released earlier in the UK; is also getting a release in the US.

Amazon US • June 14th

Interestingly, it's still at least NZ$30 cheaper to buy this from Amazon UK.

We didn't get a SteelBook release of BOB MARLEY: One Love 4K in Australia/NZ, but there is one coming to the US on May 28th.

It's up on Amazon US, but says that it doesn't ship to my address (Christchurch) so good luck to anyone attempting to order it.

I tried to order Monk Season 6 a few weeks ago and it was the same thing. It went through 4 people at their help desk and no-one knew why they wouldn't send it. Turns out, soon as it went from a pre-order to actually shipping, it magically became available to us NZ types. So you might be lucky with Marley...

Amazon US are notorious for their pre-release prices. It will most likely drop in price before release date.

So, reviews are appearing after the early screenings of BAD BOYS: Ride or Die; The fourth film in the franchise. You'd think that this could be a money grab from Sony, but nay, not if you believe the reviews spreading over the web. Some are actually saying that it's the best film in the series. Set for a NZ theatrical release on June 06th, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence make a triumphant return with their witty remarks and over-the-top action. An early 4K Christmas present perhaps. I remember the last one being a fantastic A/V experience on my Home Cinema set up. I'm hoping for the same from this one.

Collecting is fun! And I love the collector’s discerning eye and attention to detail - which I believe I can see from your photos.

I’ve also spotted more than a few articles regarding a potential resurgence in physical movie media and a declining interest in streaming services. I remain cautious on this subject, but am hopeful that physical (4k) media will remain for quite a while.

We’ve had Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime in our household over the past 5+ years, but presently we have none. And intend to keep it that way.

I became irritated at the varying image quality available on these services and finally, I felt I couldn’t depend on them to provide a consistent, high-quality entertaining experience.

Mainly due to the higher quality of 4k media vs my streaming experiences, I began collecting 4k discs - and haven’t turned back!

And as “Guff” mentioned, re-releases of older films is simply fantastic! Casablanca on 4k? I wouldn’t have believed it only a few years ago.

Cheers!

Since I read your post, I have done a bit of research on this release. Firstly, the packaging is easily damaged in the post as the discs are not in a standard black plastic case, but a cardboard case. Many users are receiving their order with squashed and buckled packaging, which obviously does the discs no good. Yes, many users are having major playback problems.

The Xbox-S doesn't seem to be able to play the discs at all. Sony X700 and X800 fair little better and LG UBK90 has issues. People have had more luck with the Panasonic DP-UB820 and DP-UB9000, but even these players are not 100% successful.

Mercury are turning a blind eye to the complaints and instead, are blaming people's players.

Universal are now aware that there is a problem and are looking into getting it fixed. There is an email for Universal for US users to get in touch for a replacement when fixed.

As NZ stock of this release are US Imports, it could be a little hard to get a replacement if you are unlucky enough to have bought a copy and are having issues.

If you imported from Amazon US, you can always return it for a refund. But that is a hassle.

If you bought it from JBNZ, you should get a refund.

Yes, this one is a buyer beware product. I already have the 2007 Queen Rock Montreal & Live Aid blu ray, so will just stick with that.

Universal Pictures are re-releasing BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Ultimate Trilogy on June 4th in the US. I bought the very same trilogy last year from Amazon US when they had a really good price on it. The only difference that I can see between the two releases, is that the new release, although in the exact same Slip Box as before, has the discs housed in regular black plastic cases; Whereas the first release was in DigiPak format. I really like the DigiPak, but many users complained that they were damaging the discs because of how tightly they were packed in their holders. They are a bit fiddly to get out, but easy does it.

The Slip Box front cover states that it is The Ultimate Trilogy and I have to agree. 4K and Blu-ray versions of the films, plus a Blu-ray Bonus Disc and Digital Code for each film (only usable in the US), Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on all three. The films look superb in 4K and if you don't already have this and you are a fan of the films; I highly recommend it.

The DigiPak is still available on Amazon US for around NZ$44. The new release is NZ75 to Pre-order. With the only difference being the packaging, the DigiPak is obviously the value for money choice (just remove the discs carefully). Spend around NZ$80 on applicable products to get free shipping.
