The word is that JBAU are having a Buy 1 Get 1 Free Sale going live when the Australian stores close on Wednesday night, May 22nd which is 7pm NZ time. Pre-orders are excluded.

The sale will run until Wednesday May 29th. Good Luck!

This may be the perfect opportunity to add Lawrence of Arabia to the cart +1 other.

I wonder if it is a qualifying title.

Cheers!

We’re keeping an eye on either a 77” or 65” Sony 95L once their prices drop either in 2025 or 2026. We’re not sure which size we’ll settle on.

Cheers!

An excellent choice! 77" all the way 😁

I love Sony TV products. I know they are usually more expensive than the competition, but IMO they are absolutely worth it. The upscaling of HD content on my Sony Bravia 75" X95J LED is amazing; I don't know how Sony do it. Even my wife occasionally comments on how good the images are and she is one of those people who don't normally see (or look for) a difference.

I have a Panasonic 65" OLED in my very dark Man Cave and its a great TV. If/when I replace the Panny, I will be replacing it with the A80L OLED, or whatever the equivalent model is when the time comes.

It should be. It was included in their last 20% off sale.

Awesome!

I’ve added Reservoir Dogs Ltd Lenticular 4k to the basket also.

I could never justify Lawrence for AU$80, or Reservoir for AU$65, but AU$40 each is spot on 👍

Cheers!

ARE STREAMING SERVICES SHOOTING THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT?... I HOPE SO 😁

I was reading on another Forum that from July the Amazon Prime streaming service in Australia (and presumably NZ) is asking for another $2.99 a month. If you don't want to pay this, well that's okay, but you will have to endure advertisements in your movies and TV series. This comes on top of a January 2024 price increase from $7.99 to $10.99

Disney Plus  standard prices have slowly crept up to $14.99 per month for up to 1080p (Full HD) or if you pay the annual subscription its $149.99; Equivalent to two months "free". Their Premium plan is now $18.99 per month, or $189.99 annually for up to 4K UHD and Spatial Audio. I believe that these two options are ad free, but you will still get Disney promotional ads.

Netflix raised their prices on March 5th to $14.99 for a basic subscription (up to 720p, HD). A standard subscription is $20.99 (up to 1080p, Full HD) and the Premium offer is now $27.99 (up to 2160p, Ultra HD). All three options are ad free. You can add extra users to your account for $7.99 per month. The extra user(s) will be charged to your account, but they will have their own log in.

Apple TV+ is perhaps the leanest, regarding programme content of these four subscription services, but it is regarded by many as the best quality service when it comes to audio and visual performance. If you haven't tried Apple TV+ before, you can get a free trial for 7 days before deciding whether to join. Some Apple products such as an iPhone or iPad also give you a free 3 month subscription if you are new to the service. There is just the one subscription of $14.99 per month, which allows you to access up to 4K UHD and Spatial Audio depending on what your TV/Audio can output. There are no ads on this service.

There are some other options in NZ such as SKY TV's Neon, but the above are the "big boys" of streaming here.

I have used all four services at one time or another. Some were free trials, others paid for. But I have cancelled them all. I do have a subscription to Apple One ($29.95 per month) which includes Apple TV+, Apple Music, Apple Arcade (games) and 50gb of extra iCloud space. The package is a monthly saving on the individual subscriptions of $16.71.

So, what am I ranting on about? Well, we have heard (but not listened) to the doomsayers, claiming that streaming services will totally crush physical media, but with the continual price rises and the blackmailing threat of introducing advertisements if you don't pay the extra fees, its causing users to cancel these services and look elsewhere for their entertainment and the physical media community is prepared to welcome them with open arms 😁

BUT, and this is a big But,

That future is all predicated on physical media having access to content to put out,

Disney own a huge movie IP footprint, and streaming Studios continue to do funding deals with other "traditional" studios to screen content on their platforms after big screen exclusivity ends.

So far Disney have been happy to release on Physical, but that ending is only a  management decision....

Plus then there is the consolidation happening, Fox into Disney, MGM into Amazon, the potential Paramount to Sony,

There is a awful lot of Flux out there, and the future is still very murky.,

iIs certainly true that 4K is moving into a "collectors" space, as Vinyl did before it.

But I really can't see DVD as a format having more than 5 years in it, 1080 blu ray might survive a little bit longer,  but the golden age of physical media is over....

I think that we all realize that the "Golden Age" of physical media is over, and true, it's future depends on continued studio support. Apparently Disney have handed over the marketing and distribution of their future releases to Sony. At least in the US. Sony will certainly be the major player in physical media if/when they acquire Paramount's huge catalogue of titles. Interestingly, Sony don't have a mainstream streaming service of their own.

Physical media will, I agree, rely on a niche 4K market for its future, if there is a future, but streaming services are slowly turning consumers against them.

Absolutely agree. Sony also started and own Blu Ray, like as a product so they have the biggest stake in it as a format.

Movieman: Seeing as everyone is counting their 4K titles, I just counted mine. 167, including titles “on their way”.
I count trilogies etc as 3 titles.

Apparently I've got 460, though thats desperately inflating the figures by counting Director's Cut, Theatrical Cut, etc etc as separate...

I can see that we might have to lay out a set of rules for our 4K counts 😁

JB AU mission completed - Lawrence of Arabia Steelbook and Ltd Lenticular Reservoir Dogs. Nice deal and thanks for the heads up Movieman!

JB wouldn’t post to NZ so had these delivered to my brother in Beenleigh, Queensland.

Oh, I forgot he’s holding another 14 4k blurays for me, so that’s another 16 titles en route 👍

Cheers!

They wouldn't ship the Wonka SteelBook Edition to me, so I bought the Standard Edition and The Beekeeper.

Welcome to the Weekly 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray & SteelBook Release Schedule for Thursday May 23.

I was expecting three new NZ releases this week, but The Beekeeper has been delayed. Ocean's Trilogy and The Abyss are available to ship. To counteract the non-appearance of The Beekeeper, American Sniper has had a sneaky release, after previously not displaying a release date. Some New Release news from Mighty Ape and a buying tip for Mighty Ape from Breezzee. Ask them for a price match if you would prefer to buy from them instead of JBNZ. No new releases for Australia, but don't forget JBAU Buy 1 Get 1 Free sale, which runs until May 26th.

Click on the post# links for the individual release information (artwork, specs, etc.) where available. Just click on the link and it should take you to the correct post. Then click on the back arrow to return to the schedule.

Individual film artwork and specs will be posted as soon as ALL info is available  •  Release dates are subject to change  •  New Releases will be displayed for one week after release date.

I didn't realise how dire the UHD figures were. On a happier note though, looking at the past eight weeks, UHD has grown by 5.97% vs Blu-ray at 2.66% and DVD at 1.28%. It's good to see all three formats growing, as it likely shows frustration with streaming.

Edit: I'd misunderstood the figures. I thought they were sales figures, whereas they're actually availability of titles.
