so a bit more testing shows that my router doesn't get over 7Mb to the same VPN endpoint.

Set up internet connection sharing on a VM that has Astril client installed and bounced through that for consistent 25Mb+ every time.

Think I will actually change to this method now. Easy as I have a fail over Hyper-V cluster in the basement to run an always on VPN. May not work for people that don't have kit lying around for this.

I suspect that the speed difference is to do with processing power on the router but I could be wrong :-)

I came to the same conclusion.

The processor in the average routers are not quiet powerful enough.

That said. I believe there is a DD-WRT type setup that you can install on an old PC. That should speed things up.

Was going to try out Astrill tonight on a DD-WRT router, but did some "before" testing to see what my current speed is like. This is on a TCL 100Mbps cable connection, from my laptop over gigabit ethernet to router:

What router? If you are running DD-WRT on an WRT54G you are probably wasting time as it is most likley too slow for 100 Mbps.

I was using a Cisco SRP 521W and getting max 85 Mbps on my connection to the Vodafone/TCL internal test server. Swapped with different brand and now getting 100 Mbps consistently. Testing to LAX via Witopia I got those 10 Mbps.

I have an SRP521W and a Linksys E2000 running DD-WRT. On the SRP521W I can't get above 80Mbps on the TCL official speedtest, the E2000 can't get over 70Mbps on the same test. Doing a speedtest to LA Dreamhost server I get 6 or 7Mbps on either router - that's fairly typical for me. With the Astrill VPN installed on the Windows laptop I get 5 or 6Mbps speedtest to the same LA Dreamhost server.

Is there something else I should be doing to speed things up?

If I connect my laptop direct to the TCL cable modem, I can consistently get 99Mbps to the TCL speedtest page. So upgrading to a better router will definitely help to get maximum speed. But I still only get 6 or 7Mbps to LA on speedtest.net. I've *never* seen international speeds like geekiegeek was getting above and I'm still not close to even getting the 10Mbps that freitasm can get. Is it worth me logging this as a fault with TCL? I'm not convinced they'll help.

I'd give it some time. I am told Vodafone has been putting in more bandwidth to international traffic and tweaking things in the last couple of weeks.

From looking around, it appears they region lock certain channels on the device
Is it possible to have both USA netflix and BBC iPlayer working on the same device?

I'm sure I seen a reply to this yesterday but it isn't showing anymore?

I looked into it a bit more and doesn't look possible with different firmwares for each region which locks you down unless someone makes a private channel or you side load it onto your device

A shame as I tested BBC last night on mediaportal with unblock us and i could stream 1080p with no buffer delays

As an aside I know one of the reasons for the Roku 3 was the headphone jack on the remote.

But if it's like the Roku2 the Roku also supports IR remotes so unless you're playing Angry Birds where IR is not feasible, its easier to use IR than BT to control the Roku since it means you can use a universal remote like a Harmony.

Yep, the UK have some dedicated devices but don't appear to have the Roku3
