Hi Guys,

Just sort of jumping in on the band wagon here. Its taken me til tonight to realise the EPG isnt up and running anymore and obviously this post has been discussing why.

I did find here on geek zone some one had mention Freeview supply the guided information. But it needed to be transfered into an xml file.

Well I wished I could remember where this info was posted, but any way they also mentioned a programe they used to do the conversion. Well I down loaded the program ant ir dosw work well. It downloads the file an names it freeview.xml. I found in the config I could tell it to rename the file as tvguide.xml which is great.

I've dumped the programme into my medai portal tv server folder and set up a schedule for it to run every day. So far so good. Excuse the ramblings as a couple of beverages may blurred some of the finer points but hopefully what I've found will help others.

Ahh here it is.

Open the config file and change the freeview.xml part to tvguide.xml and dump all four files into media portal.

Setupo a schedule on FreeviewToXMLTV.exe and your done.

which now supports rss feeds for automatic updates (user configurable location of rss feed)

there is no configuration file (other than a dummy sample) hosted there, you will have to find it yourself.

Thanks Reven. For all the work prior to this and getting everything sorted for us unwashed masses and for uploading the 3.1 code to googlecode for us to work with.

Now, you'll have to excuse my ignorance but could you (or someone else) explain the rss feed side of things? What will it let me have/do that a scheduled task doesn't let me do now?

an rss feed replaces the webservice automatic update i use to host.

you can point it to an rss feed that lists configuration file updates to automatically update the configuration file if a change occurs.

currently there are now rss feeds online, but i've put an example of what a rss feed needs to look like on the wiki on the google code page.

and then you just need to edit the xmltvnz.exe.config file and set the rssfeed url in there.

the code could do with a refactor

the gbpvrlibrary(also on google code) has better refactored code, which does basically the same thing. its way more generic though, as you can specify the attributes used inside the xml config file. i took basically the idea behind xmltvnz and put it into the gbpvrlibrary metadata project.

yeah that was a typo (wife was rushing me out the door :)), but ive just been informed there is one online now (i wont post it, the host will be posting the url shortly).

and the refactor thing, ive got a nasty habit (as do most developers) of writing the code before i've actually decided what i want it to do. i make it up as i go along (getting better at this), so when xmltvnz v3 was written, i was desigining as i went. hence the mess. when i wrote the gbpvr library metadata code, i knew what i wanted it to do and that code actually came out really nice.... really really nice actually.

so if someone ever wanted to rework xmltvnz for another project, i would suggest using the gbpvrlibrary instead.

Here is a newspaper item regarding pending court action.

The outcome of this case is likely to have a great deal of influence as to whether Sky TV is correct in its assertion that third parties providing programming information without its permission are breaking copyright.

Who will be affected by this take down notice?

Reven, of course,. but also the PC home theatre community. In particular the people that want to watch Sky on there PC’s. These people are all paying customers of Sky and hand money over to Sky every month for there decoder box.

Well done sky! Go ahead and bite the hand that feeds you. I think that it is very unlikely that these customers will want to ditch there home theatre systems and buy a my-Sky box.

So what has Sky managed to achieve? They threatened Reven and pissed off many of there paying customers.

We see more of this all the time now. Big company’s treating there customers like they are all criminals. One day they might realise that without customers they won’t have a business.

This is a very cool article with the pending court case will having far reaching effects for New Zealand. The article mentioned the IceTV case in Australia, and this actually prompted me to take a look at the IceTV website and take a look at their offerings.

I asked myself if I'd pay $99 / year for EPG??? The short answer yes, I probably would. However there is a slight difference between their offering and what we are discussing. IceTV offers only free-to-air channels, not EPG for Australia's equivalent of Sky (is this Optus?)

Perhaps this is not a slam-dunk like we all think?
