I use safari, but even though the twonky program can find the tv address (as the client?) and yes its ticked and correctly identifies the tv, but how do I tell the tv to find the twonky? I go into the Media server menu on the telly and it cannot find any server.
Seems like you're on the right track. For me, the TV just lists my computer as a server without any fuss. There was a time when I'd tweaked a few settings including turning off the setting that automatically hooks up to clients. I couldn't access the server until I'd ticked the box for the client and saved the settings again, but even then, the server was listed by the TV, but access to it was denied.
It seems as if for some reason the twonky server is not announcing itself, so I'd just try restarting it (the software server that is - probably no need to restart the Mac) and rebuilding the database as a first step - that's what the support forum suggests. Do that, don't muck with the nicrestart thing - I never touched that and all is OK. I didn't use the flash interface either - Flash doesn't play well with 10.4.11 and grinds incredibly slowly I find.
Probably irrelevant, but how is the TV attached to the LAN: wired, or Wifi?
Get the TV IP address and see if you can PING it. Again, it probably won't help much, but it'll confirm that the network link exists.
Oh - a couple of things more:
Repair your permissions, just as a matter of routine.
Look at the console log to see if twonky is complaining.
Look to see if there is a crash log.
There's also a way of turning on diagnostic logging by twonky, but I've not followed that up.
