Movieman:

Reviews are hitting forums in the US for ALIEN: ROMULUS, and its good news! Reviews are mostly very positive and the consensus is that its the best Alien film since 1986's ALIENS. In NZ cinemas now!

Another Disney/Fox title, so it will be an import when released on 4K disc (or an iTunes/Apple TV app purchase). Either way, it sounds like a goodie.

Saw this last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Would love the 4K Blu-ray but will have to see what the import cost will be, otherwise will be another iTunes 4K purchase.

There are a bunch of re-issue 4K titles arriving on August 21st. I am not going to create a new link to them all as they are the exact same discs as previously released. Contrary to what is implied on the JBNZ website, these titles are all 1-Disc standard releases. I don't know why they are being re-issued; some of them were only recently released with an included Blu-ray disc and are still available on several websites.

I'd much rather have Deadpool & Wolverine, Alien: Romulus and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes than these re-issues. 😠

I'm going to purchase all of the Disney/Pixar/Marvel import films from the Apple TV Store in future. I can get Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes for $19.99 at present and it will be offered cheaper than that at some stage. I just picked up the Alien Quadrilogy which includes James Cameron's 2023 remaster of Aliens. The bundle cost $24.99. It won't be long before Alien: Romulus will also be available at $19.99/$24.99 and Inside Out 2 is expected on August 27th at $24.99. Add to that Deadpool & Wolverine and the savings over physical media importing is huge. I'm still buying physical media, but my importing days are over.

All of the Disney related releases have got Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos on board and the slight improvement on physical just doesn't make it worth the money. I realise that this is what the studios are pushing for, but it just seems like a no brainer to me, especially if you are on a limited budget.

Honestly I'm leaning towards the same. Is there any word about JBNZ importing any of these titles?

Are there any concerns about buying it digitally and then losing rights etc down the line? Can you download the movies so you can watch them offline? I've not used the service in that manner before so unsure.

It's frustrating being priced out of the market due to distribution rights. I'm hoping physical media grows to the point where we get good prices but it seems to be creeping towards high prices for collectors.

Personally I only own a couple of movies on Apple TV. That's the service I'd probably be the least worried about losing access to (not to mention having the best selection of 4k content, at least when I bought my Apply TV box). You can download for offline viewing but it'd be locked to the app with DRM protection.

That's a good solution, might keep an eye out for a sale and pick something up.

You can only maximum of 1080p for offline copies, 4K HDR is locked to streaming only. Same with the Atmos tracks. Also you need to use the old iTunes app to get the .m4v file otherwise the Apple TV app downloads it in a new blob format that you can't really do much with. Not a deal breaker for me, just something to be aware of.

I have over 500 titles purchased from iTunes/Apple TV Store, and up to now I lost just one of my titles. It was Source Code (2011). Occasionally titles will disappear, usually to upgrade or something, but they always come back; Source Code never did.

I don't know if you already know, but you automatically get films upgraded to 4K when they become available in that format. That is, if you originally bought it on HD (1080p). Many titles become available for $4.99, so if you buy them in HD at that price, you still get a free upgrade to 4K when available.

You can download any of the titles that you have, but they will be downgraded to 1080p. I think that Apple have some sort of agreement with studios not to allow 4K downloads.

I keep the NZ iTunes store thread here on geekzone up to date with new releases, upgrades and pricing; along with any streaming news. Take a look 😀

DVDs are likely to remain popular if any physical media does. Most people skipped Blu-ray and are still familiar with DVDs. My friends often call my 4K discs "DVDs." While Blu-ray and 4K will survive, they'll probably be niche formats due to lower demand and higher costs.
