I've got a Samsung series 6 40" LCD purchased end of 2009. LA40B650. I want to sell it and get a 2nd hand Panasonic plasma. What would be a comparable model? I reckon I can get $450 for the LCD and then Spend 450-800 on a Plasma. Reasons:
A.Want better blacks for night movie watching.
B.Want a TV that won't emmit tuns of infrared interference which makes me HTPC remote sluggish.

I will be only using this with an HTPC. Must be 1080p.

Any input much appreciated.

If you can find someone parting with a smaller 2011 model in order to get a larger 2012 model, then that will probably be your best option. Keep in mind that the models with 'X' are 720p panels and the U/UT models don't have AR filters.

Almost all televisions auctioned on Trademe are either old, low end or overpriced. You can still buy one of the last 2011 model P42ST30Zs new for $989 which may be a better option in your case.

^ they must be getting pretty thin on the ground now. We're in that awkward stage where the new models aren't all out and the old ones have dwindled.

Hmmm good point. What about rs-232 control? Looks like I'd need to go to a vt30 for that? $++ hmmmm I wonder if I'd be able to get a 42vt30 for around 1k as they run them out? Dream'n ay.

I don't know if our models had rs-232 support. The UK/EU GT and VT did via a 3.5mm jack IIRC.

Ok, anyone able to check theirs? My Samsung has rs-232 via 3.5mm jack, lets fully control the TV, as long as it's already on!! Grrrrrrrr.

The NZ manual shows an audio out jack where the service jack is located on the british model.

They can be had, I got this for $999 http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=465851446 and it really has only done 400 hours.

Having a look at Pricespy and priceme you can get a full hd panasonic plasma 42" for $700, if you can visit some place called Magness Benrow or are in the Auckland area which they deliver around then you can currently get a 42" 3d Panasonic Plasma on sale for $700 which is pretty damn good and makes me wish I was in Auckland, I'd be selling my plasma and buying one of these. Dick Smith have non 3d full hd 40"s for $799.

I've seen the 42" full HD Panasonic's for under $650 in Chch, so it's not impossible whatsoever.
I would suggest picking up a NeoPlasma over a traditional non-neo every single time, but it may well be outside of the budget of the OP.

Yeah I've seen a number of models ~42" Well under 1K But as mentioned above some of these models have some deficiencies. I.e. Some models which a 1920x1080 resolution but are not 1080p. Or Don't have AR filter. What I'm saying is that I want the all the best features but I don't want to pay for them. Is that so unreasonable?

I think a G30 of GT30 is what I need...hmmmm.

G30's do not exist... nor do 42GT30's - well not in NZ, only 42U30's, 42UT30's, 42ST30's and 42VT30's.
42ST is do-able price wise, but the 42VT30 will probably be sold out well before it has a chance to go under 1k.
Pony up the cash, or you'll be left reading about your new TV on-line rather than watching it in your home...

Yes, you raise some interesting points. Perhaps ST is a good option then. Whats the difference between GT and ST? I'm only concerned with 2D picture quality. Back to the internets for more reading...

The GT is a THX cert TV with improved styling (the bezel doesn't look fugly) and it comes with both ISF and THX options. The wifi dongle comes in the box and... um... I guess the rest is on the NZ Panasonic website - do a comparison and you should be mint.
But as the GT doesn't exist in the size you're considering, well, the 42ST30 would have to be the best choice right?

I just want to make sure I dont downgrade, my series 6 is still a pretty nice TV, I suspect the X, U, UT would be a downgrade. ST should be superior.
