I'm building a HTPC and I need a PCI to PCI express adapter, like this one:

http://intrl.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/Slot-Extension/PCI-to-PCI-Express-Adapter-Card~PCI1PEX1

Does anyone know where I might be able to get one in NZ?

Glenn

US$60 !!!!
What sort of PCI-E card do you need to install. Might be cheaper to try and find a PCI equivalent.

Why aren't you using a motherboard with PCIe slots??
Any board without them must be fairly old.
Got to be a better solution than looking for a convertor.

It's mainly because I screwed up and bought the wrong board (Intel D2700DC). It has a mini PCI express and PCI slot. I can still return it, but I'm not sure what I could use instead. I want something that is fanless.

Seems to me like that is asking for trouble. The bandwidth of PCI is 133MB while PCI-e is at 250MB (1x) and faster on later generations. Available power is also greater. If you need PCI-e I think it is time to upgrade...

Thanks for that. It would still be cheaper to get an adapter. The board was only <$118+GST.

I found this mini-PCIe adatper http://www.hwtools.net/Adapter/PM2.html , which would also work with the addition of a PCIe extender. Just need to find out if anyone nationally stocks either of them.

So a miniPCIe to PCIe adapter would be a better choice than PCIe to PCI.

Might be cheaper but I think it is highly likely you will have problems with it taking into account the issues I highlighted earlier. Personally I would spend the extra and get something that has PCI-e built in rather then hoping the adapter will fix it for you. If it was the other way around (adapter to go from PCI card to PCI-e slot in MOBO I would be far more optimistic of it working correctly but you are trying to make a very long in the tooth standard run a new bit if kit. Kinda like plonking a new Mazda 3 engine into a Mazda old 323 and trying to splice the wiring together.

Just like you said :-). The mini-PCIe to PCIe adapter would be more likely to work, isn't it pretty much just the form factor that is different?

Yes that would work. Found one here

http://www.hwtools.net/adapter/pe4l.html

You would want the PE4L-PM3N ver1.5 option I think. Still think you should just spend the extra to get the right mobo but at least think this option would work.

I thought this one would do it http://www.hwtools.net/Adapter/PM2C.html
with the PCIe extender cable http://www.hwtools.net/ExtenderBoard/KZ-B21.html. The PM2C version is externally powered and is cheaper ($US25) than the PM2 version ($US40) which appears to have board supplied power. The external power should not be a problem with a standard PC power supply. All up incl. shipping it's ~$NZ70, which is still cheaper than getting a different motherboard.
