Hi
If I want to run HDMI over cat5 cables does the cable run have to be a direct run from the sender to the receiver or is it possible to use some sort of star network configuration?

I believe it needs to sender -> receiver only. I have one working at home with HDMI that I got from Jaycar and Cat6 Cable over about 10m. It works perfectly

Do you see any lag when using the remote vs a directly connected device (this assumes you are using a AV source i.e sky etc)

Yeah, I agree, has to be a straight run, with both cables pretty much the same length, i used a 5M and a 2M and I got interlacing/artifacts

But using 2x 5M Cat6, runs perfectly

Are you getting yours from Monoprice.com?

I have done a little with it as a "star" layout. The hub is a 4 port HDMI splitter in the server closet with many cat-5 to HDMI adapters plugged into it. 2 runs in the house are fine on the cheap $30ish ones off ebay. that wasnt working on the longer one to the garage so I have a set of single cable claims longer run ones on its way to me.

Quickly uses up all your cat-5 tho at 2 cables per run.

richms, to get this right you are running the cat5 from the sender to the hdmi splitter and then another cable back down to a receiver thus removing the requirement for a direct run which is difficult for existing builds. I am currently running some cables direct over approx 30m. Works great. In the bedroom we still use coax for Sky. Hard watching SD after watching HD on the other TVs in the house. I have seen the new HDMI extenders which allow you o send HDMI signals over a single cable. Cost quite a bit more. Has anyone tried them?

I used the small Jaycar HDMI over dual CAT5e cables at my sister's place, using their structured cabling installation I installed myself, and it works well.
The computer and the TV are actually in the same room but on different sides so the signal goes HDMI out from the computer into the converter then into two RJ45 sockets on the wall. From there they run back to the patch panel in the study, where they are punched down as normal.
I've then used two short patch cables to patch them through to two of the sockets behind the TV.
Then at the TV the two CAT5e cables are plugged into the two sockets on the wall and into the converter back to HDMI into the TV.
So in total there's probably around 20-25M of CAT5e cable between the converters.

I have also used the extenders at another site that run over a single cable and they worked well too.
The extenders I got from Dynamix and they were a lot more expensive than the dual cable extenders.

My experience...I use this from monoprice, which is the best priced (still not cheap though) single cable solution that supports latest hdmi standards such as 3d and 10.2gbps, and IR too.....

I use a hdmi splitter, to feed the sky hdmi out to the lounge and to another room using the above product , via a patch panel over about 20-30 meters.

I tried patching the 2 pairs of sockets together and it never worked. Needed something active there to actually work.

I'm not sure the brand as such (aren't they all functionally the same), it's just the one the electrician installed. Has about 40 ports, and I just used a patch cable to connect the receiver outlet to the transmitter outlet.
