Hi All.  I have a library that will not fit on my iMac HD (500Gb+).  So I shifted it to my 1TB WD External (USB2 Powered) but it is still in my iMac iTunes Library (just located on USB External). At present my Apple TV2 (720p) will NOT buffer anything located on this External. If i shift a movie to the iMac, it will buffer, put it back on the external, and it won't.

Im picking that the USB external won't transfer the files through home sharing fast enough to stream.

A friend suggested that the router may not be good enough for streaming. (which makes sense, but I don't think is applicable as it works fine when the files are on the iMac HD).  So, I thought I would buy a 2TB Time capsule. Enough space to hold my library, and the router built into the TC would slightly improve my wireless setup.

I Rang apple  and they said that getting a Time Capsule would not improve the situation. THey said the only way to increase buffer speed is to shift the media I want to stream back to the iMac, and possibly upgrade iMac Hard Drive.  This will not work as I have found it impossible maintaining a library in different places, and it is far too expensive to upgrade iMac hard drive.

My Question to my fellow Geekzonians is that if i bought a FireWire 800 capable external, consolidated my iTunes to the that external, would this still buffer through Apple TV? THis is going on the basis that FW is faster to transfer than USB2.

If not, what solutions exist? I refuse to believe that no one else has an Apple TV with an iTunes Library bigger than their iMac HD.  Thanks in advance.

My iTunes library is around 1TB, it is sitting on an small NAS, I can stream to my ATV (original model) fine.

What speed wireless are you using?

USB2.0 speeds (i think its around 400Mb/s) are far faster than your wireless network speed so I couldn't see how making the connection between the iMac and hard drive faster would fix your problem. Something screwy must be going on.

Have you moved your library properly and consolidated the database?

Even assuming all your music is at 320Kbps, you'd have to have a pretty rotten connection to not be able to stream that given that even a poor 802.11g connection is going to be at _least_ 10Mbps (54Mbps - half-duplex - massive overheads - error correction = around 10-15Mbps).

Upgrading an iMac hard-drive is extremely non-trivial. You probably don't want to get involved, and I'd imagine the cost of getting them to do it would be significant.

Firewire has significantly lower CPU overheads than USB does which could _potentially_ be part of the issue, but I'd be surprised. A FW800 connection should be faster than USB2 at any rate, but not significantly so unless the external unit has a particularly good controller, which is unusual.

I've got an Apple TV which is streaming from a Mac Mini over a FW800 connected drive, and it works perfectly. I don't recall if I've tried it via a USB connection, but I've no real need to do so, I mainly use Firewire for the CPU benefits. I can even stream fairly high-bandwidth 1080p video with no issues whatsoever.

This is over a 2.4Ghz 802.11n network using an ATV2.

Pretty sure I've managed to stream from the USB ports on my router as well, and the throughput from that would be pretty awful.

This said, the Mac is connected to the router via LAN, the ATV2 is on wifi. This would improve things, but I still doubt it's going to be whole issue.

Music is sweet its just the movies /tv shows.

The router is a 54 Mbps G router.

The movies and tv shows are iTunes "organized" and sit on the external.

THe music is on the iMac HD.

Does consolidating it all to one place increase the speed?

Is your USB drive connected direct to the Mac, or plugged in to your router / NAS and sharing it over the network?

If the data has to traverse the network twice, i.e. from the drive, to the Mac, then to the ATV, then that could bottleneck a low speed WiFi network.

I always had problems streaming HD movies to my Apple TV from my iMac using 54g, I could stream HD movies fine using N

If you consider that the iMac is connected wirelessly to the router AND the apple tv is connected wirelessly, there is less bandwidth to go round.

My movies stream much better on an N network, but even then it doesn't match a wired network.

I'm keen to hear how this all pans out, both for tech interest, and as I will be setting up an ATV3.

Partly on topic, this may be of interest.

I did think about this, but  they streamed fine when on iMac HD.

Did some browsing,

my decision (pending feedback) is to get a firewire 2tb external (from the apple store $349 and the new airport express base station. I will run the AExpress in conjunction with the current belkin router. (Airport for Home Sharing and Belkin for the rest). If the AExpress can handle the whole load of my network (2 laptops, 2 iMacs, 2 iPhones and an XBox) then I will ditch the belkin completely.

I will consolidate the whole iTunes library to the external.

How does the knowledgable GeekZone community think?

I have an Airport Extreme, with numerous devices around the house connected via Wifi and CAT cable.
A 2TB USB HDD is plugged into the Airport Extreme and I back up to it via Time Machine, seems to work well.
I've had no issue streaming to my Apple TV2 via wifi from my Macbook Pro and the external storage is quite brilliant.
