Hi all,

I've been running freeview DVB-T via my Mediaportal 1.1.1.0 setup for some time. Normally its fairly solid (other than the occasional restart/reboot/reenergise) but tonight out of the blue I started getting stuttering and video glitches watching live TV on all channels (previously recorded TV is fine). My normal TV has a freeview tuner and was not exhibiting any of the same behaviour.

Looking in TVServer Configuration and using the manual control section, I can see that most channels are reporting around the 40% quality mark and actually its a bit jumpy (although I've never looked at this when its been working - doh). When I oberserved this, the "strength" indicator was at full. Anyway, I played around with swapping cables from the telly to the media portal but no change - TV kept working fine, media portal kept having problems.

Recently (as in 6 months ago) we had a new aerial installed and the installer told me that we were getting the uber signal and showed me some nifty figures (which meant nothing to me) on his flash digital TV meter thing.

The only thing that is a bit different tonight is that the weather is BAD. It’s really windy and raining quite a bit - does this affect DVB-T signals? I must admit that if it were weather related I would have expected to have seen a problem before - Wellington is not exactly known for its good weather.

Could it be that the tuner in the PC is just less sensitive than the one in my TV? Could it be that the mediaportal software is just not as good at dealing with lower quality signals than my TV?

I've been meaning to upgrade Mediaportal for some time but have learnt not to touch it unless absolutely necessary.

Anyway, would be interested in thoughts.

Regards,

The frequency change on Monday has caused issues for some people.

What TX site do you come off and do you have direct LOS to the transmitter?

Hmm. Interesting questions :). Umm, dunno. I assume Mt KauKau, but then again, maybe Haywards? The aerial is sorta pointing towards the Haywards now that I think about it. We are quite high up, but there are some hills/houses etc in the way - so I'm not sure if that counts as direct line of sight.

Is there some way to tell what transmitter you are using (I guess maybe from the frequencies that the channels are tuned to?).

From the frequencies you could tell if you are off the SFN infill network or Kaukau.

Plus the WN infill are vertical except for Baxters.

FIXED!!!

Whilst checking frequencies I noticed that my Mediaportal box had seemingly hooked onto a different transmitter than my TV!! WTF?!

Anyway, ran a manual retune on my mediaportal box specifically against the transponder (is that the right term?) frequencies that my TV was using, it updated all the channels - and BAM (there was actually a BAM noise) everything’s working fine again.

<sigh> things were so much simpler in the analogue age.

Anyway, thanks sbiddle, I don’t think I would have figured that out without your prompting to check the frequencies.

Later!
