After loads of mucking around with my HA51 AVPC, and some regular crashes, i decided I knew exact;y how I wanted the machine, and would reformat, and do it from scratch with the recovery DVD and the driver CD.

Well... the recovery CD is merely WinXP Media Centre edition - not a full recovery image. Once installed (and it had loads of trouble with the SATA driver), I had to install all the drivers from the driver CD.

Boots up, media centre runs fine, tv tuner driver installed, but when trying to access live tv (or indeed any incoming video stream e.g. sky), it says "video decoder malfunctioning or not installed, please restart media center or your pc".

Any tips? Im going nuts here, and dont want to hav to send the entire thing back to DSE to have them copy an image over from a new machine.

I guess i should have taken an image on day 1 - but with a 'recovery DVD' i didnt really think it was necessary :-(

What TV card does it actually use, it's a Hauppauge MCE150 isn't it? Have you tried installing the drivers for that from the website and also ensured you have installed an MPEG decoder on your system?

a bit of googling reveals that out of the box, MCE doesnt have the required codecs, and although the AVPC was setup from the factory with them, I cant seem to find them on the supplied driver CD or "recovery DVD".

There are lots of solutions around, including installing PowerDVD which I tried, but it failed to change anything, and then following another forum link elsewhere, I found this download, which instantly cured my troubles...

I was aware of dscaler as a open source (free?) MPEG2 decoder but wasn't sure they had implemented the ability yet to decode CSS encoded files. So you could play MPEG2 files so long as they were not original DVD's etc. So does it provide CSS decryption now?

not sure of the details, and have not tried a DVD in the player yet - i will do so tonight and post results here...
