Hi all,

I have a Windows media centre PC that was running Windows 7 64bit.

It's connected to a TV via HDMI and a second TV in the bedroom via HDMI extender over Cat5/6 cable.
All was working flawlessly on W7 but after the upgrade to W8 it no longer works (the second TV says 'no signal')

In windows 8 I can turn on the option for the second screen to duplicate, but it still doesn't work?
The nVidia control panel shows it as an Analogue Display (even though it is plugged into HDMI)

I can normally nut this stuff out, maybe it's related to my wisdom teeth being removed on Friday. I didn't realise they actually contained wisdom!!

I'll take a guess ---- some new kinda copyright protection in win8. Or perhaps some kind of hdcp handshake issues with win8 and your setup.

Sorry I cannot help other then to ask... why? Why go from W7x64 which is rock solid and has great WMC support to W8 which is new, unproven and known not to offer anything extra in regards to WMC??? In fact it sounds like it is more limited and not just in regards to your HDMI issue :(

New is NOT always better...

I suspect that this can be easily solved by upgrading your box from Windows 8 to Windows 7.

Install any Windows updates. Look up on Nvidia's website to see if any new Windows 8 updates approved are available for your graphics card.

Do whatever you want to do man.

@Nety Newer is always better! You have to try these things. Analogue TV and video tapes where rock solid as well :-P

@billgates I have the latest nVidia W8 drivers

Windows 8 is actually pretty useful on a TV with it's big stupid tiles, they are easy to see from the couch.

I remember having an issue getting this going on W7 as well, I just can't remember how I got it going. I'll will win!!

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

Good luck - please post the steps you took to resolve this issue when you finally get it done. Any info you could post about avoiding headaches will be appreciated by many...

Issues like this are the reason I won't be installing W8 on what I use as an "HTPC" but I have no doubt there'll come a day when this is no longer an option.

If you swap the plugs on the back of the PC (so that the extender is connected to the HDMI port you know is working), does the TV on the end of the extender then work?

I WIN!! I finally had some time to fiddle with this and I fixed it.

Method:
1. Connect both screens and switch on
2. Uninstall the nvidia display driver in device manager (not recommend while your wife is watching Home& Away)
3. Restart and let Windows reinstall the driver automatically (with both screens on)
4. Select devices on the pop out side bar thingy> second screen> duplicate
5. DONE

It turns out to have nothing to do with the extender, plugging both tv's directly still didn't help, I might change the title if I can to better reflect the issue.

Should be: 'Dual monitor with nvidia geforce not working on Windows 8'

Hopefully this will help someone else

Have changed title. Good to here you got it sorted. So you are now running on the MS drivers is that right?

I also have problem with Windows 8 on my HTPC

Before Windows 8 I was using Windows 7 and everything was fine but with Win 8 I have "no signal" message on my LG 42" LED TV. I tried to change HDMI cable but that didn't do the trick as well as uninstalling nVidia drivers (my HTPC is based on nVidia ION). Then I connected HTPC to another LG 27" LED TV and it works without any problem. Bots TVs have Full HD resolution and on the problem TV all I can see is BIOS and boot up till Windows switch to graphical UI - then I get "no signal" message :(

Please is there a suggestion what should I try next? Of course I could go back to Windows 7 (I have image of the system drive) but I prefer Windows 8 for it's speed, better memory management and then the big tiles that I like for HTPC.

Ta, I'm gonna try that. I've got the exact same problem. Vista worked fine through the TV fine with no tweaking, as did Ubuntu when I last tried it.

Dang... that didn't work.

I'm going to go for a refund. The only reason I use the laptop is as a media centre.
Not happy about returning to Vista... might just make the lappy a Linux machine.
