EPG Collector V4.1 is now available on Sourceforge here

https://sourceforge.net/projects/epgcollector/files/V4.1/

There are no specific enhancements affecting New Zealand users although, as usual, it has fixes and enhancements that should benefit everyone.

If you are already using V4.0 and you experience problems you should update before posting a request a for help.

Should I be adding all 3 UHF frequencies for a given area to the search list?

Edit: nm, found a post in the v4.0 thread saying that I don't, although the first one I chose (592Mhz) didn't seem to have EPG data available, possibly a too-weak signal on that frequency though?

Tried another frequency (578Mhz) and it seems to be pulling in data happily though.

When doing a scan, I get this error right after TV3 and before C4.

TV series lookup has an exception of type XmlException when searching
The 'br' start tag on line 11 position 2 does not match the end tag of 'Overview'. Line 12, position 163.

There's no "Processing C4" line, only a "Processed C4" result, so I'm guessing it's something to do with that? - Doesn't appear to be issue causing.

Possibly the first frequency you tried was too weak a signal. Thats normally the problem.

The collection carries on and finishes despite the exception doesn't it? The exception suggests the data from TVDB is badly formed but I'll check it out.

Occasionally text that ends up in the collector log file doesn't appear in EPG Centre during a collection. You will probably find the Processing C4 line in the log file. Something to do with timing I think.

Yes, the collection finishes and I can't see any obvious problems with the resulting information.

There will be one TV programme that didn't have metadata added so you are not likely to notice it.

I just tried the same collection (except on satellite) and the exception didn't occur so it may be transient. If you keep seeing it put the word LOOKUPS in the Trace box on the Diagnostics tab and there will be a line in the log file for each programme it looks up.

You can identify the offending programme then and if you post the details I'll take a look at what TVDB is sending for it.

Hey guys, My media centre had a major HDD failure. Is someone able to share there config file for the epg collector setup for the satelite feed.

Any help is greatly appreciated. This is just to help me jump back to action as quick as possible as I lost my setup :(

Edit: Cancel that, I forgot about the samples :) It's been a while since I've had to set it up

I'm not a complete idiot, I still have some parts missing.

Hi,

I'm setting up my first HTPC and trying to get to grips with EPG collector. It looks a bit daunting but I've fallen at the first hurdle.

My download doesn't seem to have any ini files. Also there is no msi option on SourceForge (which I was hoping to use as it looked more automated). Am I missing something?

When I try to run EPG centre it crashes straightaway saying it can't find part of the path.

There ia an msi on Sourceforge.

You should install it first and then unzip the latest fixpack - 9 - over it.

ah thanks I got it.

this what my ini file looks like:

[GENERAL]
Output=<ApplicationData>\TVGuide.xml
Timeouts=10,300,5

[DVBT]
TuningFile=New Zealand.Auckland - Infill.xml
ScanningFrequency=530000,8,MHEG5
#Auckland - Infill
Frequency:538000,8,Y
Frequency:570000,8,Y
Frequency:666000,8,Y

 Is that okay? I'm actually pointed at Waiaturua but I see the frequencies are the same.

Yes but you only need one frequency. They all broadcast the same data. Use whichever is the strongest for you.

You should also set the option on the Output tab to 'Create data for stations with the same name.....' when you use NZ terrestrial if you are putting the data into WMC.

Thanks for the help! It seems to be working well now.

I edited the ini file myself, but when I went to close EPG Centre it wanted me to save. "save" was greyed out but "save as" worked, and seemed to create a new ini file. Maybe I didn't need to do the first one?

Just waiting for tomorrow morning to see if the scheduled task thing worked....

Don't manually edit the ini - always use EPG Centre.

I was following the instructions in our BDFL's post here: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=126&topicid=61903

I did look at (and print off - eek!) the readme file but found it a pretty humbling experience. I rate myself "okay" in terms of PC savvyness but the setup really pushed the envelope of what I had done before. A step-by-step for some of the common scenarios would really help. e.g. Win + WMC.

But that's how we learn...I certainly would have given up if it wasn't for the help here.

What made it hard for a noob was:

Not finding the .msi file on on SourceForge: You have to look underneath the big green DOWNLOAD button for "Browse all files", then look inside the "V4.1" folder. It is quite a long way down (21!) the list of different files available. You are looking for "EPG Collector V0401000 Install.msi"

It wasn't obvious (to me) what to do with the zipped Fixpack files. You have to unzip them and copy them into the same folder as your EPG Collector installation, and click YES to replace duplicated files.

And most of all: Following old instructions!

That writeup is out of date. I suggest you pressure BDFL to update it.

There is a 'Getting Started' section in the ReadMe which lists the steps involved. Most of the ReadMe is taken up with describing each field, option etc available in EPG Centre. It's a reference document.

Unfortunately what you might think is a common setup (NZ terrestrial) is in the minority. The vast majority of users are on satellite in Europe or, more recently, North America. You would be surprised how long a writeup could become on just importing to WMC.

The software can be difficult to set up because it has a lot of features (satellite, terrestrial, cable, ATSC, 9 protocols, 3 output methods) but if a preset task fits your scenario it is dead easy.

Most of the options are for special cases.

I agree the files on Sourceforge can be confusing. I'll delete most of the old fixpacks when I add the next one.

Can you use EPG Centre to do a transport stream dump of 602 or 650 mhz?

The option is under Run. A 30 second dump should be enough.

Upload it somewhere and post the link. I can process it here and sort the problem out with your help.
