I've just installed the Onkyo HTX22HDX (2.1) and was looking at doing 3.1 on the very very cheap.

This would involve cutting the RCA connector off of the centre speaker from a set of retired Logitech x-530's and wiring the speaker in.

HTX22HDX states 6-16 ohm only on the back, Logitech says its speakers are 4 ohm (i'm guessing nominal?)

Would this kill the receiver?
Is there a way to increase the resistance of the speaker up to 6 or 8 ohms? Even if it's difficult, i'm looking at saving money, not time ;)

just don't turn it up to anywhere near the absolute max on the dial

the onkyo does not know - ahh this is a Logitech speaker that is rated 4 ohm. my factory tells me I can't do it, it better blow up.

what the onkyo might do however is succumb to the laws of physics

V = I X R

V is 240V or whatever the internal transformer fixes it at

hence if the R goes down the I (current) will increase

the onkyo is made cheaply and is not intended to produce phenomenal amounts of current. however that only happens if you get drunk and dial led zeppelin to the max. if you use a 4Ohm speaker and listen at normal to high normal to quite high normal levels it will cope just fine.

Will sound aweful and stress the amp even at lower levels.

Since its a class AB amp in home theater amps, they will dissapate more power for the same output levels, and it is worse at moderate levels than higher levels. Ohms law and all that. You will have to keep the levels so low that the total power dissapated by the amp is within its acceptable range that you will probably not even be louder than the tv speakers would be. It comes down to the amount of current the amp is designed to supply, and the rail voltages it has. Higher voltage rails will deliver more power into a lower ohm load, what doesnt get to the load will be put out as heat by the amp, currents will be way higher at the lower impedance.

Speakers like the logitech are equallized to hell and back on the amps they are supplied with. Anything else you hook it up to will be largly flat on the output and expose all the flaws in the speakers response that logitech corrected for in the amp.
