I have just discovered that my Moviestar 100's have been putting my Yamaha RX-V373 into power protect mode and will have to be replaced.

I was sold the whole package from HN and was assured that they would work fine together but after a second trip to the repair shop the tech pointed out that the Moviestars are 4 Ohm and the receiver is only rated to 6 Ohm. I didn't know enough about impedance to check for this first but HN have been good and will replace the speakers/receiver to something suitable.

The easiest solution seems to be to replace the speakers but my wife really likes the shape and size of them so I am reluctant to swap them. I would be prepared to upgrade the receiver though. Having a look around I see the Yamaha RX-V673 is good and has this in the specs

7-channel 1,050W = 150W x 7 (4 ohms, 1 kHz, 0.9 % THD, 1 ch driven)
630W = 90W x 7 (8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.09 % THD, 2 ch driven)

Does that mean that it would be suitable for these speakers? What does it mean by "1 ch or 2 ch driven"?

If anyone can point me towards any other receivers in the $1000-$1200 range that would be awesome.

it means those specs are only achieved with 1 or 2 channels being fed a signal.

basically playing number games to produce impressive specs.

when fed a 5.1 signal as in normal use you can expect far worse results.

ditto the power rating into 6 ohms instead of the more standard 8 ohm.

6 will make bigger numbers.

go back to hn and get a set of 6 or 8 ohm speakers.

try wharfedale diamonds.

overall a pretty pathetic result for the yamaha.

they really don't build them like they used to.

I'm not sure how many receivers in a suitable price range are stable down to 4 ohms on a regular basis... I know Pioneer's LX86 is, but that's a 5k receiver.
The speakers should be fine at conversation type volume levels, but when you crank them you will either hurt the amp, or the speakers. They really are a little speaker designed to emphasize TV audio and help with movies.
If you're after something that's easy to drive, but offers a compact form factor, look at Klipsch... they're well known for running on the smell of an oily rag.

I'm currently using those and pretty happy with them; running well off an v373. I'm thinking of getting a couple of klipsch floorstanders for the fronts though (or even a pair of bookshelf speakers, though not sure if that woud have much effect - gonna have to go listen to some if i can)
