I know all the good sites for computer gear, but don't know what the intelligent alternatives to SmithCity/NoelLeeming/DSE/HarveyNorman/etc. are.

just looking to get a 21-32" or something with freeview, maybe USB, too.
seems like the aforementioned stores stop stocking anything lower edge like that in favor of having a standard 'our cheapest is $500' product with alllll the latest features (twin tuners and other things I don't need, as I have no recorder).

should I just go to The Warehouse, or is there something better online?

any input appreciated.

cheers guys.

Many of the computer retailers also carry televisions too. I'd begin here for bargain hunting. The 'by default' three year warranty is fairly attractive IMO.

Nothing cheap there, a semi-decent Sony 26" for the same price as everyone else (prior to shipping)...
I think NZ lacks the likes of a Kogan's, so unless it's non-mainstream brands from the likes of the Warehouse, I'm out of ideas.

best to just buy a set top box, then? (I mean, if LED TV prices will drop by over $100 in a year, then there's no great loss in buying the box I won't need when I get a new TV eventually, but I may as well just get the TV now if they won't be much cheaper in the future.)

If you're looking at the smaller end of the range I got a 21.5" TV/Monitor from PB Tech recently for $199. It's basically a Freeview TV that shrank in the wash.

Not sure if that is what you are after but most of the PC retailers should have it.

JB HiFI, The Warehouse and PBTech?
Plenty of others around.

PBTech has nothing cheaper than the standard stores aforementioned (circa $500). JB is a little better, but I'm starting to wonder if I should just go to TradeMe and pick up something non-HD, since it looks like no one else has it (I'll be using an indoor antenna, so reception will be crap anyway).

I'm a tad puzzled by this:

http://www.thewarehouse.co.nz/red/content/electronics/freeview-information: Recycle your TV for $5 at one of the below collection points and receive a voucher to redeem 20% OFF your next purchased Veon or Akai LCD/LED TV or Digital Receiver*

*Offer expires 30th April 2013.  South Island only (North Island is coming).  Excludes flat screen TV's, computers, appliances or any other electronics.  Households only. 20% discount is off the retail ticketed price and is not in conjunction with any other offer.

Yeah that's some genius small print from the Warehouse...

So are you planning to get an outdoor UHF aerial for your TV at any point?

"Excludes flat screen TV's,". They are taking about the TV you are recycling. They are interested in CRT TV's only. Not the TV that you get the voucher for.

I very much doubt the landlord will wire up every room to a roof antenna or the sky connection in the lounge.

oh, that makes sense.

how does a CRT compare to a flat-screen: I see 1000:1 or 4000:1 contrast on these warehouse brand TVs, while Samsung/etc. ones are like 4,000,000:1 ... where would my CRT fall in this range?

IMHO any Flatscreen is better than a CRT :-) Except a Veon :-)

To be honest You get what you pay for..

Whats the difference between a $300 32 inch TV and a $1000 32 inch TV? Quality? Features?

See the reports of the Veon TV's on geekzone..

Stay away from them..

no one buys a 32" that costs $1,000? Wink

so, bottom line: either get a set top box or be prepared to spend $500 for a TV?

Check PriceSpy

Choose Audio and Home Entertainment
Choose TVs
Choose LCDs
Set the top Price to $500
Set the Size to 32->32
Choose DVB-T

And.. you'll come to the LG32LS3400. I tooks ok on Paper and LG is a OK brand name

Look at the graph of the price and the prices people have had it.. you should be able to get it for about $399 if you ask nicely

Change all the options around on pricespy and see what you can find..

Of course people spend 1k on a 32" TV!
Not everyone wants crap, and let's face it, A LOT of the 32" TV's on the market at the moment are truly poor TV's. Terrible sound, next to no connectivity, poor motion, average (at best) colour accuracy...
You do, unfortunately, get what you pay for.
To get back to the main point - how do you hope to achieve a decent UHF signal into your room without an outdoor UHF aerial? Do you know that an indoor aerial will work perfectly in your current location?

I don't.
I've never had a decent signal anywhere.
