Hi Guys,

This is my first post, so I hope you guys can help me.

Well for starters, I have just moved into a new house and I am waiting for Sky to be hooked up, so in the meantime I am using the built-in Freeview in my TV.

So I am wondering, since I am getting analog sound from the wall to the TV (remember my TV has built-in Freeview), how do I get the audio going through my home theatre Yamaha amplifier from the tv.

Just for reference anyway, I have my MySky (currently not working), my Blu-Ray player and my Apple TV all plugged into the Amp and then an HDMI cable going into the TV.

This currently is working for me, but the analog sound is becoming a bit annoying, any feedback or suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,
theorangekiwi

What audio outputs does your TV have ? If it only has a headphone out you could use that (won't be the best) but will work.

What model TV and receiver do you have? If they support ARC that's a good option.

I have a Panasonic Viera VT50Z Smart TV and a Yamaha Natural Sound AV Receiver RX-V473. I do know that the
receiver does support ARC.

EDIT: Receiver* and it is spelt RX-473* thanks to Dunnersfella

this is how mine is setup (also pannie + yamaha)

HDMI from receiver into HDMI 2 on the TV
On yamaha Setup->HDMI->Configuration->Both HDMI control + ARC are on
On the TV Veira Tools->Viera Link-> Speaker selection = Home cinema
and then selection on the yamaha while watching TV is Audio 1 I think, or something like that. That gets me TV sound playing through the receiver.

Do you mean Yamaha RXV473?
If so, the best result will be achieved by plugging an optical cable out of the TV, and into the optical port of your Yamaha receiver. It can provide 5.1 surround sound (where available), whereas ARC is designated to give you 2.0 sound, unless you force the amp to simulate surround sound.

Interesting, I have an ST50 + V373 and think I get surround from the TV without forcing anything on the receiver, at least from some channels - can't check right now though mrs half way through a movie ;-)

There seems to be a fair bit of discussion around this for the VT50 though, with a number of people saying it will do surround sound from the internal tuner, but 2.0 from other sources if they're plugged into the TV instead of receiver?

I checked this and do seem to be getting surround from the TV over ARC without forcing anything on the receiver; at least on channels 1,2 and 3, unless I'm misinterpreting what it's showing - basically when I swtich to channel 1,2,3 on the TV the receiver shows all speakers in use while on the other channels it just shows 2 speakers.
