Looking to up grade our current TV need help figuring out what would be better. A Smart TV or using the money save on a Standard Tv and get a Mini HTPC system to hook up to it. We have a Tivo, no sky. We would need to be able to use Skype, TVNZ Ondemand, You Tube and maybe a little browsing. Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

For ease of use I would go HTPC any day. Smart TV interfaces are too clonky

Smart interface is too slow. Drives me and even the kids bonkers. We all just end up doing stuff through the PC.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

The flip side is while an htpc is much more capable, unless you're planning on using a keyboard/mouse, most sites you'd stream off present a regular desktop interface to you...which from 3 - 6m away is hard to use and read.

Windows 8 and Unified Remote for android is a pretty good combination in our house.

It's more the display a web page like I'm 2 feet away (like a laptop) that I find is the biggest issue. The control is easy enough, if annoying to have to use a keyboard.mouse. I prefer to use a remote. And most web sites don't respond well to a remote
