I just came back from the US, and purchased a ROKU 3.  The first three weeks, it worked beautifully (with a timely Global Mode on and unlimited bandwidth from Slingshot).

The past week, only on the Netflix channel, I can watch for about 40-90 seconds, then it has to rebuffer, sometimes exits to 'show' screen.

I've called up Roku and Slingshot, and they are both pointing fingers at the other.

However, I can watch Netflix on a laptop, w/o any problems at all . . .

Sounds like a ROKU issue.  I updated to the latest software for the ROKU box (as support suggested), but didn't make any difference.

Before I go out and buy a VPN, was wondering if anyone had similar problems?   Solutions?

If it works fine using your computer, it should be fine too for Roku. Saying that, I haven't had any issue with my Roku3 and Netflix using unblockus

Roku 3 works fine using Unblock-US.

This is why an ISP shouldn't try to offer a service like this.

Don't worry, when you get back to your home in the USA after your visit to nz it will probably be fine.

(You are using the global mode properly as intended by slingshot right? Being an overseas based person accessing your services? If you aren't the they won't offer you any support.

Yes, I am using US services here in NZ using Global Mode.  The conversation with Slingshot was quite interesting.  They said they don't troubleshoot any specific problems with any services (or sites), only that the Global Mode was 'on' and it was working properly.  Pretty short conversation.  Looks like I will be ordering the unblock-us service after all . ..
