I am looking on Trademe at Apple TV and noticed that people want $279 - $300 for Apple TV 2.

Why is this better than a brand new Apple TV 3?

I am a bit lost!

I recently got a WD TV Live and it works well, but my server is quite loud and in my bedroom, I would like to get a similar device and move the server from my room!

you can jailbreak the ATV2, but not the current ATV (which is actually the 3rd Gen, but Apple just call it "Apple TV")

Ok, so does that really matter?

I can still use Apple TV with my Plex server can't I?

Depending on what you do a Raspberry Pi + Raspbmc will do the job quite nicely, they're quick, can play 1080p and can run anything including Plex. Best low cost media centre in my books imo.

But yes without jailbreaking you can run Plex on an Apple TV3.

Instructions

Persoanlly the advantages of an apple tv over a raspberry pi, are that if you wanted, you can get netflix and hulu on it. And use it for itunes movies. A raspberry pi can't yet do netlifx or anything like that....but a raspberry pi is more tolerant of other video formats. I've had 2 Pi's, given them both away. Tried one as XBMC and the other as Plex - they worked ok, but I found them a little slow.

I have a Roku and 2 Apple TVs now, and prefer the Apple TVs to be honest.

Thanks David, Usually an Apple device would attract a premium, which is why I am a bit confused, the Apple TV at $160 seems to be a good buy compared with WD TV etc.

I guess I can play movies from my Ipad etc as well with Apple TV.

Better than that, you can project any screen from your ipad onto your TV using Airplay. For me that's a deal clincher.
