With Digital Switch Off looming, and a general accumulation of obsolete kit and spaghetti wiring, I have finally got around to re-cabling the living room. This was more of a pig of a job than I thought it would be. Mostly I'm now happy with things, simpler and better working.

The one thing I'm not happy with is the DVD recorder. I replaced my old and much loved Panasonic EH68 with one of the newer XW390s. On paper it should have been a vast improvement - twin freeview tuner instead of one analog tuner, DLNA server to stream recorded material around the house, larger hard drive etc. It connects both to a UHF aerial and (via the good old yellow, white and red AV cable) to the Sky box.

The freeview tuners work fine. I can record etc without problems.

What isn't working is timer recordings from external sources. I can set it to record from composite by pushing record, and I can tell it how long to record once I have done so (eg record for two hours, SP mode). However, I can't set a timer - eg record from AV from 3am to 4am. I can do this for over the air sources, but not from the external AV source.

My EH68 could do this, and could my even older e85H, and it's fairly vital to me. Most of what I record is things like the late-night military stuff on the History channel for watching the next day. Book it on the sky box, set the recorder for the right time, and it works fine. However, I can't figure out how to do this on the XW390, and have had to reinstate the old recorder in the meantime.

Question - does anyone with one of the new Panny DVD recorders (or Blu Ray recorders, it's probably the same) know whether/how timed recordings can be set from an external source? (Not from Freeview using the tuners - that's easy)

I feel a bit silly asking, but I have reached my frustration level with the manual etc.

Any help much appreciated.

I have a Panasonic BWT720 and it records timer recordings OK from external equipment.
Just select "New Timer Programme" from the PROG/CHECK menu and enter all the details manually and it's set to go. Never failed me yet. Yours should be the same.
It sounds as though you are using the record now function where you press the record button then say how long you want to record. If so thats the wrong menu.
The Prog/Check menu allows you to see what is set to record from the programme guide and to add manual timer recording.

P.S. Accessed via the Function button on the remote then select Timer Recording.

The problem is, it doesn't seem to do that. Or at least, I am missing something if it does. When I press function I get the following option:

The timer recording gives options to set a timer manually, but this only works for a freeview channel. I can set date, start time and end time etc, but can only select a scanned channel as the source.

Under "other" the Flexible recording menu gives me the option to select AV as the input to record from, but only lets me select a quality, and duration - with the sole option of "start now"

Panic over - solved. I will post the solution here (it's a bit non-obvious) for anyone with the same issue.

A big thanks to B1GGLZ, for pointing me in the right direction. Trial and error (well, frustratedly stabbing buttons) did the rest.

Solution:
1. Press Prog/Check on the remote
2. Select timed recording, new timed recording.
3. Press the red button on the remote to get from channel list to AV as source option. For some reason this needs to be pressed four times (a menu item scrolls from favourites1, favourites2....) until it finally offers AV as an option.
4. Then you can select mode etc and it's good to go.

Panny products are good (it's my fourth panny recorder and I have TVs, cordless phones etc from them as well), but I must say their manuals are awful - and do a real dis-service to the quality of the products.

Happy now .......

OK
You're nearly there.
Once you get to the entering times, date, etc, repeatedly pressing the red button (see bottom of screen where it says "category/AV") will step the input sequentially thru, all digital channels, radio, favourites 1,2,3,4, AV then back to all digital channels. Use the red button to select AV then carry on with date, time etc. Using the up and down arrows just steps thru the scanned channels. It's not obvious in the manual and not very clear that you use the red button. Took me a while to figure it out when I first tried manual timer record.
