Guys

I brought a Samsung Plasma 42" tv in May last year, since then it has had a couple of faults, the first been within a month of purchasing it the IR receiver went bad, then a couple of months later red dots started appearing all over the screen (normally on a dark background), which progressed in to the panel not working at all...

Now last night the panel started with the red dots again, and is suffering from some form of screen burn. Not the typical screen burn from having a static image on the screen for too long tho. During a dvd, hit the stop button, the message "press Play to contuinue appears across the top of the screen, so press play (this has only been on the screen for 10 seconds or so) wait for the next dark scene, and sure enough you can see Press Play to continue in the back ground.

So we switched it off and went to bed...  this morning, it was fine, but after running for an hour or so, it is back....

Now as the screen is under warranty it will be fixed, however the warranty runs out next month...  so I guess when it reoccurs again (lost faith) I will have a waste of space panel ot look at....

So had anyone had similar issues on Samsung panels, or other panels?

Cheers

It sounds like you do definately have some sort of issue with your screen.

In regards to the "press play" burnin this is probably just temporary ghosting. An image only needs to be on screen for a short period of time and this will cause temporary ghosting (which looks similair to screen burn) that will often stay for maybe 30 seconds afterwards. For normal TV viewing this is never noticeable but try and use a Plasma for something such as internet access (which is not recommended) and you'll see that onscren images tend to stay visible in what looks like ghosting. An easy way to see this is to go so something like Google with the high contrast colours on a white background. Leave the main page on screen for 30 seconds and then enter a search phrase. When you go to the next page you'll probably see the Google ghosting present for maybe 30 seconds afterwards.

I doubt if Samsung or their agents would fail to honour the warranty just because the period has run out and a problem that occurred in warranty recurred after the period expired.  I would talk to Samsung just to make sure

Not that it helps you probably but I had problems with a Toshiba RP that starting occurring after 11 months. They were not successful in fixing it (to my satisfaction) so Toshiba NZ authorised a return to Harvey Norman (full a full credit of the purchase price) and I bought a JVC RP instead (much better set by the way)

I've had a samsung panel - PS42S4S - for a couple of years with no issues whatsoever.  I've been really happy with it.  My only complaint is my own fault: i thought an SD panel would be fine - that i didnt need an HD one.  Now that i've hooked up a Media PC I seriously wish I had bought an HD panel.

Perhaps you might try contacting the importers (Radiola) and asking if you could swap it for another screen given its history.

With regards to the warranty running out - most of the screens advertise a screen lifetime of 60,000+ hours.  You may be able to argue, using the Consumer Guarantees Act, that the goods do not match their description (are not as durable as described) if the screen fails before the 60,000 hours.  Using this arguement its quite likely you could still get it repaired "under warranty".

I had to contact Radiola to get the fixed anyhow.  Seems they are going to fix it.  They said last time all the electronics in the tv were replaced....  but still sounds like they are going to repair it again (here goes another few weeks without the tv)

I did ask them at what point do they give up, they said they would talk to there tech, and if I didnt hear back shortly assume it is going to be repaired, which is cool, as long as it keeps working this time.

So the TV is 'fixed', they adjusted a couple of pots within the TV, now it appears at this stage the red snow effect has gone from a dark background, but it now seems to have a green snow effect on people....  Although this isnt as noticable when sitting, it is present.  Will have a look at some other screens and see what they are like.

As for the Ghosting, well they turned the contrast down and said that would resolve it.  I guess along the lines of what Steve said this may well it correct.  I will see how this goes..

Cheers
