Hi all, just a quick one....

Just got myself a Win8 laptop and am quite liking it. Something I really like is the built in media player app that has the 'Play To' function. It can 'cast' (for want of the proper term) the media you have on to a device that supports DLNA streaming. Android do it to with their 'Share' button.

All very well and good but what is this actually called? I am hoping there is a plugin available for VLC (or other media player) that lets you do this because the only problem is that Win8 app won't play MKV's which most of my TV series are in. I just don't know what I am looking for exactly.

I am trying to keep things simple and if i can find a good app with this 'cast' function it will mean I won't need yet another 'media box' plugged in to the TV. I have a plethora of Raspberry Pi's, Chromecasts and a Roku but want to try and keep playing the media the same for all TVs without spending more cash. The Roku will stay with the main TV as it has Netflix etc on it. I can stream the MKV TV shows via the Plex app on the Roku but I want this 'cast' function for the other TVs.

Thanks in advance!
Sam

That looks like a propriety protocol.

What Windows and Android use is standard DLNA (my understanding anyway). My TVs support this and I believe it runs through the network, not a peer-to-peer connection.
