Hi all.

Space limitation means I cannot go for more than 42''. Smart is a must.
Comes down to these two models. The specs/reviews are very similar, with some exceptions:

  • The Panasonic can do 100Hz, the LG is a 50Hz only
  • Panasonic sound is better than LG
  • Panasonic has a very good Smart UI (in reviewer's opinion)
  • LG is dual core, Panasonic is single core - makes me wonder about DLNA/USB playback of 1080p
  • LG has TOSLINK, Panasonic doesn't
  • LG is $695, Panasonic is $888
  • LG has an optional Magic Remote, not sure what optional remote the Panasonic has
  • LG has the connectors on the side, the Panasonic has them on the back

All these are really not deal breakers, so I guess it's down to personal opinion. What would you choose?

Panasonic is actually 50Hz refresh rate. Go for the Panasonic model. It's got great reviews.

Does the Panasonic have coaxial audio line out? If the Panasonic has better integrated sound but lacks both coaxial and optical (Toslink) then it sounds like your decision will come down to whether you intend to buy a separate audio device to use with the TV.

Thanks billgates and alasta.
I ended up getting a Panasonic (it turned out I was wrong and it did have TOSLINK) - overall it seemed like a better package.
But now I discovered that the Panasonic doesn't have something that is actually a deal breaker for me - a swivel base! I got so used to having a teli with a swivel base I never even considered the possibility it might be different with Panasonic.
And what really pisses me off is the fact that I asked 3 different sales people at Noel Leeming about the differences between the 2 units, and not one of them mentioned the fact that the LG had a swivel base, whereas the Panasonic didn't. Bloody hell.
Now I'm wondering if, having unpacked and assembled the Panasonic, I can take it back and swap it for the LG...

The're pretty light, you could just put a soft cloth under the base and it will turn easily.

Were the display TV's on the wall? Or on their stands? If they were on their stands, well, that's pretty simple stuff really.

On the stands, but top shelf, so could actually see from the floor.

You, sir, are a genius. No sarcasm - this is a perfect solution, especially given that it came with a plastic strap that attaches the back of the pedestal to the back of the TV cabinet. With a soft cloth underneath I essentially got a swivel base. Awesome!

Just to finish the thread off - thanks to everyone who recommended the Panasonic unit. This is an awesome TV - the colours are amazing. And the Smart interface (the home screen) is brilliant - it actually makes the smart features usable, something I've never seen in a TV before. Definitely happy with this purchase so far.
