hi guys, can someone let me know if I would need a transformer or if a simple plug adapter like this would work for a Sony NSZ-GS8 Internet Player with Google TV.

according to the website the power info is

Power

Power Voltage : AC 120V
Power Frequency : 60Hz
Power Consumption (in Operation) : 21W
Power Consumption (in Standby) : Less than 0.5W
Power Code Type : US

But I don't want to risk blowing it up if I attempt to plug it in just using a adapter, and if it needs a transformer then I wont bother buying it. Or could someone point me to an alternative AC adapter that would work in nz for this?

Have you got the adapter in hand? Most of the AC adapter these days are in dual voltage modes.

The travel adapter will only work well for AC adapters that are International voltage (110v-240v). Having look at the Google TV itself, it is just the two-pins lead and the unit itself has the voltage control. Seeing that it is listed in US as (120v) it is hard to judge if it is actually able to handle 220v/240v.

I'd wait until you get the unit in hand, and if required, just pick up a up-voltage converter from local radioshacks.

p/s: As the site you linked to on multi-adapter "This adaptor does not convert voltage. If your appliance is 100v only, you must also use a transformer."

The device says its 120v so if you used that adapter plug you would blow it up immediately.

There is certainly no indication that its an international model that can handle 110 - 240v of different cycles (Hz) so you would need a transformer to change the voltage.

Conversely, there's no guarantee that the listed specs are actually correct; I have an American Blu-ray player that says 120/60 on it, but works fine in NZ. Having said that, I wouldn't risk it!

In short, get it if you feel like having it - I did thought of it once, when I saw it at TradeMe - when it arrived, check its specification, and if it doesn't look right, get a stepdown transformer.

what about a netgear GTV100, power specs say "12V, 1.5A", so would an adapter like this work? (assuming the one of the connectors fit).

dont want to buy a device then end up spending about the same as the device on an power adapter.

Judging from the pictures in the link and the specs it's 120v only so you'd need a stepdown transformer in NZ.

Yes. Any standard NZ plugpack 12v 1.5A+ would work.

In all honesty, I would suggest you hold off and wait. On the great vine, that Google is working on update to Android TV.

thanks, I'm aware theyre working on changing the os, but no clue as to when. for $160 nzd shipped (thats with the 2-4 day shipping) its not a big deal. aslong as it can do netflix and plex i can use it. mostly wanting to play with it, and maybe write an app for it...

These gtvs tend to all be based on the same Armada 1500 SoC and the boards tend to be indistinguishable between manufacturers. I imported a Hisense Pulse (worst CE device I've ever owned) and its running fine with an adapter.

I'd take a guess and say its more likely to be universal than 120V/60Hz only.
