Thanks for your replies about the 'budget model' Samsung 40 TV on sale at Noel Leeming. My general plan was to try to get a 40 LED for under $650 (I currently have an old 26"). I had thought that I could achieve this by getting one which is totally unsmart ( I use Apple TV) and with only 2 x HDMI

However some of you have pointed out that with a 50 hz refresh rate I might see drag.

Can I ask two newbie questions?

If this is budget, what is the 'next level up' which will have a better picture? Simply a higher refresh rate? What price level will this take it to?
What are the other things which I will get on the next level up? Anything worth worrying about?

From recent investigations for a family member the TVs that have the processing for higher refresh rates are normally the ones that have smart functions included as well so for a 40 inch you are probably looking at $1000 on special.

Depends on how sensitive you are to the judder. I personally cant stand a 50Hz tv any more, and get really annoyed at how bad they look.

If you are ok with 24Hz movies on a TV with no processing to smooth it out then dont bother with higher refresh rates.

If you just want it for gaming where you need all the good stuff off to reduce lag, then get the "50Hz" tv.

As screen size goes up and the TV takes up more of your field of view, crappy motion becomes more and more noticible, particually on slow smooth panning shots which even the worst of the 120/240Hz processing will do a great job of sorting out.

Don't forget - cheaper TV's typically have less colour accuracy, poor black levels, few connection options and generally much worse sound.
