I don't know if i am in the right forum for this question as I am still trying to navigate my way around this site.

I have wdtv live wired up to my wireless modem router and have a hard drive with tv shows/ movies on the HD.
I can see the HD with my lap top and watch shows thru wifi, but I can seem to see it with the Ipad through.
Is there a program or some other way I can watch videos from HD to my ipad from modem/HD?

I had a quick look at the link that wasabi2k kindly provided.

My take, is that it works, in terms of giving the capability. But, as is often the case, playback is often a very varied experience. The reason is that iOS only supports limited file formats. If you play a non supported format it won't work, unless the streamer gives that support. Then comes the next issue. When you use an app to play unsupported formats, there is no hardware acceleration. A modern iPad should handle this at 720p. use an older iPad in 1080p mp4, no problem as its using the CPU/GPU in hardware to play it. You may find that the audio won't work, as when some are encoded the combination of the settings used to encode are not always well handled.

A solution is to encode everything with Handbrake to the ATV2 preset.

If you downloaded an mp4, thats not guaranteed as mp4 is just a file extension, the file may not be the required H.264 inside the container.

Experiment with Handbrake, it works.

I don't know where you "acquire" the TV shows, but test a few mp4 downloads, you are likely to discover that some sources give a fully supported file, so you can use theirs whenever possible

I have a hard drive hooked up to a WDTV Live box. Which isvia a  Earthnet cable plugged into my WiFi broadband modem.
I can watch movies from it through my PC on WiFi to my Ipad using a program called "plex" This only works if my PC is going and hooked up to hard drive at the time.
What I would like to do is. With the hard drive plugged into to WDTV live is access the hard drive with my Ipad via WiFi only, with out the PC. Can this be done and if so what is a programme that would work on Ipad to achieve  this? I have found a programme called "PlayerXtreme HD. Has any one tried this programme and if so has it worked for the?

I use vlc player to access my tv shows / music etc stored on my nas attached to my router, router is a Fritzbox with built in media server, which is what vlc finds. Can the wd live act as a server as well as a player?
