I'd like to watch Netflix/Hulu through the Hola app on my TV. I understand that I could do this with a HDMI cable to a laptop. Unfortunately, my laptop doesn't have HDMI ports. I've seen some adapters on Trademe, but while I think they could get video across, I don't think my laptop has the audio ports it needs. Also worth noting is that I have a Blu ray home theater system that I'd like to get sound playing through.

Another issue: I have Bluetooth headphones that I'd like the TV to play through, but the TV isn't Bluetooth capable. What means if any could I use to get the TV's audio playing through them? (It seems like it would be easy if the media being played was coming from the laptop, which is Bluetooth capable. That would also resolve the issue of not being able to transmit sound from the laptop to the TV, but I wouldn't want headphones to be the only means of playing audio).

Might buying a new laptop be the best option? I wouldn't mind replacing mine (its battery is dead and power cord dodgy, though otherwise I have no real issues with it). I also wouldn't mind buying a tablet if it could achieve all of the above.

Most tvs have a dvi port use that instead of hdmi. Need an av cable for sound

As to blue tooth why not connect directly to laptop?

Odd how most of us have never seen this DVI port on most TVs. The laptop I assume has a VGA port which is an analog interface.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Does your TV only have an HDMI port? Some also have a VGA port which would likely match your laptop.

For audio you will need a 3.5mm stereo connector to either a dual RCA or 3.5mm connector depending on what the audio input connector(s) are on your TV.

As you noted you can get VGA to HDMI converters but my experience with the cheaper ones of these has been less than perfect. You would also need an audio feed with one of these.

Would probably help if you posted up the model of your TV and laptop then others could confirm things for you if you aren't so sure.

Matt.

Jaycar sells several simple USB to HDMI adaptors which carries the audio across aswell.
Several models, less than $100

The TV is an LG 395400, the Blu ray home theater system an LG BH4030S, and the laptop a Sony Vaio PCG-5KFP. It doesn't seem like the TV has a VGA port.

I realise I can transmit sound, because the speakers have a cable with an audio jack. Though for some reason it has a low, consistent static when plugged into the laptop (when it doesn't when plugged into e.g. a phone).

The audio problem will be ground loop hum. Get a Ground Loop Isolator from somewhere like Jaycar and that part of your problem will be sorted.
