I have been loving Plex even with the fact I cant use remote with it but can with XBMC. Last night brought a major limitation of Plex. Vodafone internet was down for 2 hours and even though Plex server is on my WHS2011 machine I just get blank screen on Plex client. It appears it still needs the internet for home streaming.
I like XBMC but unsure how it would go as a server.

Regs (appologies if name not quite correct) had mentioned mediabrowser 3 a little while back. I tried it but ended up with a mess with all the metadata on movie folder it was hard finding the movie file when searching through in explorer.

So is it possible to put mediabrowser 3 on without ending up with 7 to 8000 files in movie folder. And is it possible the data would be available when internet is down.

The other option I guess would be slow and tedious to make a folder for each movie so the meta data would be in the folder and the movie folder would be easy to navigate still.

Just wasnt happy that couldnt use plex when internet was down for 2 hours

Plex should work without an internet connection - I am pretty sure I have used it without internet - I will check next time I do some movie watching. There is nothing it needs the internet for (for playback).

I could understand it not going if your router was off.

Nope Plex wouldnt work without internet. It asks to login to web account then it accesses the home server and stream from that locally. So last night I went back to XBMC and streamed from home server to htpc.
Plex is easier to put up own metadata when they cant match your program.

Once internet was back on Plex worked again

There is a wee bat file called file2folder that will create individual folders based on the file name and move the video file to that newly created folder.

Had to do that for MyMovies.

will look into that. I cant leave things alone and have been changing all my computers to windows 8.1. I love the tile page. After playing with Linux for a while with intention of switching, decided Windows to stay for me as it just works and works well. So my home server is whs 2011 and htpcs and laptops are now all running windows 8.1. Just a nuisance having to buy wmc separately for each one. And with windows 8.1 I can use the media browser app hopefully. The plex app wont let me use the remote, hopefully mediabrowser app does

if you're using MediaBrowser, then you shouldn't need to buy WMC/MCE upgrades for each Win 8.1 box... unless you're doing Live TV on each of them with a network tuner..?

Not sure if the remote works within the MediaBrowser Win 8.1 app - it did for the start menu. It definitely works OK within the MediaBrowser Classic add-in for MCE, cause that's how I use it. My setup is an MCE box in the lounge, with freeview tuners etc, and an xbox 360 as a media center extender in the rooms. MediaBrowser works OK within MCE on the xbox.
