Telstra appear to be sending a 16:9 letterboxed 4:3 feed of UKTV.

Yes they send a 16:9 NatGeo signal. Would be good to be consistent

I've noticed that UKTV is not permanently in Widescreen, if it is a 4:3 programme it changes back automatically.  And no this isn't my TV.

This is a good compromise, I wonder why TV3 etc didn't do this?

My thoughts too, perhaps they get the formatting directly from the UK where they can afford to do it. It is certainly a better viewing experience.

If TVNZ did it this way it wouldn't matter if most of their stuff is 4:3. The 4:3 stuff would be displayed as is now, but would get the benefit of stuff in wide screen. We just have to wait longer cause they haven't got their act together.

When I just have a casual interest in a program, the one in widescreen is the one I'll watch.

I've seen the postage stamp effect on 4:3 TV's on TV3, the UK one doesn't have this problem.
