I wanted to record something via my HD homerun device.

I've got quick TV that comes with HDhomerun but that does not let you record.

I don't want to use windows media center as that records to this .WTV weird format.

I tried to setup media portal but that didn't work (tv server would not find the hdhome run channels during scanning). I found some stuff on line that you must import some xml stuff but I don't have time.

Is there a really simple method to record hd homerun TV from the PC?

Have you tried VLC media player? According to HD Homerun brochure it's compatible and has a record function.
Works OK with my Hauppage HVR2200 card although I normally use WINTV 7 that came with the card.

i tried vlc, but couldn't figure it out. VLC did not detect the stream, not sure how to get it working.

Anyway, found the easiest way is to use the command line. This works a treat....

C:\Program Files\Silicondust\HDHomeRun>hdhomerun_config 192.168.178.46 save /tun
er0 d:\captureTV3.ts
................................................................................
.................................................
-- Video statistics --
120148 packets received, 0 overflow errors, 0 network errors, 0 transport errors
, 0 sequence errors

Press CTRL-C to stop recording, and you get the raw stream .TS file.

Not sure how to configure vlc for this. I tried open media / capture device/ tv-digital but no luck.

Also tried view / play list / upnp and network stream, but neither detect the hdhome run.

[edit] i could not find setup info re vlc on the hdhomerun website.

Took me a while to figure out VLC as well.
Once you get to tv-digital, check DVB-T and enter the frequency of the mux you want in Khz e.g. 538000khz gets me TVNZ here from Waiatarua. Then hit play. To find the channel you want you then use Playback, program, and select channel. Complicated but works well.

NextPVR is probably the simplest - it's a NZ product that I've used for years as my primary platform for viewing all TV content.

Make sure the app accessing the HD Homerun is allowed connections through the firewall, that stuffed me up for a good 15 mins a couple of nights ago trying to get EPG collector to scan data through HD Homerun tuners.

Mythtv works really well with an HDHomerun. I have 2 HDHRs and record lots of stuff.
