I am setting up a home theatre system in a room that has been previously wired for 4 speakers mounted high in the room corners. This speaker wire is puny, and not of a thickness that I would even consider for speaker wires.

I believe the previous owner had a "High End" system, but I never saw it.

The speaker wires have been just cut off with a side cutter leaving short bare ends hanging out of the ceiling. I have installed a couple of new Yamaha NS AW194 speakers in the right place for rear surround, connected with the existing wires.

At the other end there are 5 coloured RCA male plugs coming out from the wall (helpfully labelled L & R Front, etc). Should I look for a female RCA to banana plug type lead, or am I best just to cut off the RCA ends and extend them to where my receiver is, and terminate with banana plugs?

In an ideal world I would just love to rewire but this is a very difficult house to wire. I have tried pulling on the existing wire to see if I can use it as a guide to pull through another wire, but it seems to be set in concrete...

Any help appreciated.

RCA screams budget all in one system. I would reterminate them if possible.

it's probably stapled in.

don't worry too much for the surround speakers. they mainly make noise.

could worry a bit for the front left/right - they make most of the effects that is not sub. and the centre - they make all the speech and most of the action.

there's nothing you can do though. without pulling the walls apart.

unless the walls are not part of the house wall, then you could use the ceiling i suppose and run new things for the front left/right/centre

Thanks, all good replies. We have just put the house back together after cutting major holes in walls and ceilings to retrofit gas fired radiator heating, so more cutting will not get past my wife.

Front and centre speakers should be OK to re-wire though, as I think I can hide these effectively.

I believed that as there was existing speaker wire all would be good, but it appears that it may be of a substandard quality. Someone has told me it was a Bose system installed previously. If so surely they would be using decent wiring??? I guess this depends on the installer.

As I have not connected the speakers to reciever yet, I have nothing to lose, and everything to gain by cutting off the RCA's?

Bose certainly doesnt need decent wiring when you are only putting a narrow part of the audio band into a hugely efficiant but not very good driver.

if its a bose system that was in place, the you could probably lope the ends of the rca and get neg & positive to feed into your amp

RCA terminations are consistent with Bose speaker wiring.

And Bose would fit with the "high end" description from the previous owner, regardless of quality.
