My series 1 Samsung plasma is really showing its age (windows 8 won't run because it has a resolution less than 1024x768...) and I am interested in a replacement.

All I am after is something cheap for now which I can relegate to spare room duty when we can afford something more substantial. I don't need any bells and whistles but below are the must haves.

- Not less than 42 inches but would prefer 50 if possible.
- 1080p
- Less than $1k

I only need one HDMI input as the receiver does that for me. I don't need 3D. I don't need smart TV (although could be useful). It doesn't even need a freeview tuner but this would make life a little easier later on potentially.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I don't know whether you'll find any around still (as Panasonic have canned Plasma production) but the 50" X series was still the best low end TV (and the high end was the best TV full stop, nothing new generation comes close) was being cleared out for $699 as stocks were cleared out a month or so ago.

Careful of those cheaper Panasonic Plasmas in a well lit room - glare will get you. Other than that, great TV.

The Higher end Panny Plasmas had anti-glare which works quite well.

I don't think the 50X60 is 1080p either which cuts that from the list. I like the look of the 430Z panasonic. It could be worth a closer look.

The TH-50A430 is an option... the TH-50A400 is a better one though, as it's going to cost you less.

A 768p Panasonic plasma would be the worst kind of TV to use as a computer monitor.

trig42: Boom, 100Hz, Panasonic, 50", NonSmart.

Unfortunately JB increased their price tag by $184 since you linked to it yesterday. If they won't give you their old price of $988 try elsewhere

The A430 should have better motion than the A400 as Panasonic specifies 200Hz blacklight "blinking" versus 100Hz.
