I wish to convert some MP4 audio files to MP3. Googling I have found lots of options but many seem to either restrict the number of files or insert a voice logo etc unless you have activated a purchased version.

I believe you can do this in iTunes but I would prefer to not do it that way.

Would be grateful for recommendations of a good, simple, free converter for Windows 7.

You can use Audacity to convert them.

If you can't laugh at yourself then you probably shouldn't laugh at others.

I have used Audacity in the past to clean up analogue recordings but didn't think/realise I could use it for this.

Opening Audacity up it is not clear how to use it for my purpose and it doesn't seem to be a simple process like some of the apps I was complaining about above. Looking again at the files to be converted, they are called MPEG-4 but also have an M4A label on the icon. Audacity did not seem to like that.

I am grateful for your posts but would appreciate further advice, perhaps other software?

Have you got the FFmpeg library installed, as per the link in my post?

I've used it a number of times. I just use the Open command in Audacity to open a MP4 file and it opens seamlessly

Have you looked at freemake.com?

There is a seperate program for video and audio files... I think you need to watch out for the usual spyware/ adware that it tries to install but otherwise both programs have certainly done the job for me.

Doing your best is much more important than being the best.

I'm pretty sure MPEG Streamclip could do it. You can do batches in MPEG streamclip too which may save you time. I'm unsure of the quality of the conversion though.

May I ask why you want to convert MP4 to MP3? You will lose sound quality converting from one lossy format to another.

rlevis: May I ask why you want to convert MP4 to MP3? You will lose sound quality converting from one lossy format to another.

My wife has a new car into the dashboard of which we can insert an SD card to create an in-car juke box - will not play MP4s, only MP3. Aware of the quality issue.

Do a custom install unless you want other crap on your computer, once installed- do a Malwarebytes scan and quarantine pup.optional.opencandy that will show up
