My HTPC is now relegated to watching TV on demand. It;s a bulky thing that I would like to replace with an Apple TV sized (silent) device. I bought an Android one a couple of years ago and it was rubbish, but was wondering if they have come along and can now run TV on demand sites (flash player?)

Hey Man,

I'm looking at buying one of these as well so if you do find out how good they are and perhaps how good it is with things like tvnzondemand, Netflix and other streaming services. I'm keen on Miracast too.

Not a contender as far as I'm concerned. Expensive, complex in terms of patching and management and overkill for simple tasks. About the only good quality is a small footprint.

The tvnzondemand TV3 on demand, Netflix type apps are all quality Android apps. Miracast is a nice feature too which doesn't seem to exist on a Windows PC (as a receiver).

I'm keen to hear anyone's reviews.

I know TVNZ used to work on non samsung devices but im having trouble getting it work on cyanogenmod

The version recently changed as I noticed its stopped working on my HP Slate. I'll grab another copy of the APK and side load and I should be okay again.

It sure woiukd be nice if android still supported flash. That's the only thing a Windows PC could offer for when accessing live sports off VIP sports type websites which broadcast using that. Its impossible to find a middle ground I'm afraid.

There is a flash browser called FlashFox, but cheers will try that :D

there may still be a way to install flash player too?

A side note: Another device I tried to use for this task was a PS3, but its browser flash player was not supported by TVNZ or TV3 (didn't have iSky at the time)

I considered a NUC but very expensive for what they are, if I was to lady out that coin I would look at a Mac mini, especially as I have a 5 device license for AirServer, so could swap out my Apple TV and the PC with a single device.

Cheers but I've tried a Chromecast and the experience was awful. It certainly didn't work with our Galaxy S5's which was disappointing.

The other point being if you need to get a computer out to cast a chrome tab to the Chromecast, then again your removing the enjoyable couch experience with nonsense technology which is going to annoy the wife.

The whole point of the exercise is a simple small, lowcost appliance which will do all of the functions. Anything with a PC O/S is overkill.

I use my MacBook Pro with our Apple TV at the moment which does all I could ask and doesn't have any nonsense limitations like Chromecast, works really well and is reliable, but again needs a PC on the couch to push the content, so doesn't pass the wife-test.

No further replies needed really, all I wanted was a review/comment on the Minix Unit if the origional poster has one coming.

It's very unlikely I'll invest in an android solution as from what I have read they still don't come with a Flash browser OoTB. I guess I can just hope more of the iOS apps implement AirPlay and I'll have a working solution with just an iOS device and the Apple TV.

ps. we also have a Chromecast but it's been put back in it's box and has to sit in the corner and think about what it's done.

Thanks for the reply man. Sorry to hear you're not keen to looking further into this. You can go back to older Android 4.0 4.1 devices which still have flash onboard. There are some at www.dx.com which I've been considering, but again I'm not too sure what the experience would be like and due to the older operating system there is no Miracast which would have been nice to duplicate your screen to the Box like we can with an Apple TV.

I can't see the restrictions being lifted off AirPlay as it's the application creators themselves which impose them. I noticed that either the TVNZonDemand or TV3 app (Can't remember which one) disabled itself the moment you had an HDMI cable plugged into the Android Tablet and complained about licensing which was a shame. I had hoped that Android didn't have those issues, then learnt it wasn't up to them, but the content/app creators! - Argh...

Strangely enough the SkyGO app works fine with HDMI or ChromeCast (If you can get your ChromeCast to work), and I thought Sky were the worst people!.

Ah well! - We'll draw this one to a close then, cheers all the same.

Just tried that APK on my Samsung S4 i9505 running Cyanogenmod11, with rootcloak to hide that I am rooted. You click on a video, the controls flick up and then disappear,it shows a frame of the video you're watching but there is no way to play it

I have an android TV Stick. Works OK for Netflix, Hulu Plus, but the local providers are painful and make it difficult, there's no way to watch TVNZ OnDemand or TV3 OnDemand that I can make work.

Sad to say the only solution that will work for everything involves a PC running Windows.
