Hi

I am looking into upgrading my TV and see Harvey Norman have this Sony 60" TV - KDL60W850B for $2244 (Labour Weekend sale)
I have done some research (read the CNET review) and it sounds like the picture quality is good
However I don't care about 3D and the standout sound isn't really a factor as everything is run through a receiver so don't use the built in speakers

Anyone have this TV that can comment on how good it is in NZ conditions i.e. using SKY HD

Or is there a better TV for around the same money that is better in terms of picture quality (which is what I do want out of a TV)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

Malcolm

even a cheap TV is going to be capable of a better picture than what Sky HD is capable of putting into it.

My 5 seconds of research suggest that Sony don't make their panels.  They just badge them Sony. Pay to ask google who actually makes the panel and then look at their TV's.

that is correct - however each TV has its own display characteristics and from the same feed give a different level of quality - so was more looking for someone with firsthand knowledge of this TV - or someone who has been through this process recently who may have considered but discounted this TV for something better. It is hard to find comparable reviews of other brands as the model numbers never line up to their overseas counterparts and it can be a mindbender trying to find the corresponding model to read a review

It is very nice - Mum bought one earlier this year and if I had any cash at the moment I'd be all over it at that price. Apps are lame but that's par for the course with most smart TVs.

I'd be pretty keen to wall mount if possible, those dinky feet on it don't fill me with confidence on a panel that wide. It does actually feel fairly stable, I'm just a bit paranoid with a toddler and a baby.

the physical panel is only a part of what makes a good tv.

the supporting electronics and the firmware controlling everything is just as important.

I have a Sony 60 inch 3D etc, it may be the same model, but I'm not at home to confirm.
It's great and I'm very happy with it. Likewise my audio all goes via a receiver.
Have had no issues and that is several hundred cheaper than I paid, I would think it's a good deal.

Cheers,
Joseph

I have the same model but in 70 inch.
KDL70W850B

I don't have Sky, so cannot comment on it.
But I watch Full HD movies using my PC and some Blu-Ray movies.
I find the TV on par with top end Samsung TV's.

There was an older model that had TriLuminous display but it was discontinued and was heavily priced. I was specifically looking for 70 inch and this was within our budget.

You wont like the smart features and the default apps that comes with it. They lag mostly and the remote is not great to use for apps as well. 3D features are good.

One problem I always notice is when you switch on the panel, it takes about 30 seconds for you to wait before it allows you to change channel / input source with a message "please wait". This does not happen if the TV has just been turned off and back on but only when it is turned off for more than few minutes.

For the size and price, you cannot go wrong.

Can I suggest you to try asking Sony Style to price match and give you the same model? (Sylvia Park).
The benefit of buying from Sony directly is you get one additional year of warranty.
