Hi everyone,

Got a strange problem with Freeview. We have a Hyundai HSS-760A STB. Works well enough, but it doesn't seem to be sending the aspect ratio to the TV. The TV's a Sony Bravia, and is set to "Auto Wide" mode which means it will switch aspect ratio depending on the input signal.

A few months ago, TV3 would switch to wide, and C4 wouldn't.
Then, C4 would switch to wide.

And then a few weeks back, neither of them would switch to wide.

At the same time, initially, the TVNZ WIDE channel wouldn't switch, but now it does. And TVNZ Sport Extra doesn't.

So the box CAN send the right signals to the TV, but isn't for all channels.

If the box is set for 4:3 mode, it will letterbox all widescreen channels (3, 4, Sport Extra and Wide/TVNZ 6).

Anyone had any experience with this STB and know what could be wrong? I've also tried it on another TV with the auto-detecting feature and the same problem occurs. The box is connected using composite video. Haven't tried S-Video though - is it worth a try?

Oh, and Windows Media Center on Vista figures it out fine. It's not really going to be much of an issue in the long term as TVNZ broadcasts in widescreen, but it's very inconvenient having to switch the AR when flicking channels!

have you set the "TV Type" to 16:9 in your set top box?  or is it doing 4:3 letterbox/pan and scan?

Haven't tried S-Video though - is it worth a try?

you should definately use s-video over composite - you will get several more lines of resolution using s-video and have a much better looking picture!

As I remember it the Sonys normally use Line23 WSS switching (not all brands do), normally if the STB is correctly reading the AR flags it will always reflect through to Line23. From what you say the STB is correctly reading the inbound flags, as when put into 4:3LB it switches mode itself correclty. So either the STB is not setting the outbound Line23 flags, or more likely the Sony is not reading them correctly.

I assume that you can force the Sony to 16:9 and it works correctly?

From my observation of one of our STBs that is in 4:3LB mode all the 16:9 FreeView channels are correctly flagged. When TV3 went to 16:9 some months back there was a couple of weeks when C4 remained in 4:3, this would explain one of your problems.

Yes, when the box is set to 4:3LB it letterboxes it fine, and manually switching the Sony to 16:9 is fine. The same problem also occurs on a newer LG so it must be the STB. The Sony will switch when watching a 16:9 channel through Sky decoder through RF, and when watching NTSC DVDs (not PAL ones - the DVD player is connected using component video which I think doesn't send through any signalling).

Odd though that TVNZ 6/TVNZ WIDE is sending the correct flags to the TV, so the box can't be all wrong. Unless there's another form of signalling that is being used and the STB recognises (and passes on to the TV) both forms but the TVs don't recognise the second one?

i'm not sure what signal TV3/C4 are sending but I know that TVNZ are sending full height anamorphic signal rather than a letterboxed signal

TV3 and C4 are the same as TVNZ sports extra, FHA 16:9 fulltime. Does sound like your STB is not passing the flags correctly.

Word is they won't be. Advertisers want all of the coverage to be on TV3.

Wasnt suggesting that TV3 would use TVNZ SpEx but create their own WC channel for the duration of cup. There are currently 18 channels marked out on the FreeView transport stream, only seven currently are carrying any programs.

Plus TvWorks has two additional slots already allocated to them for new channels over the next 2 years. An additional Rugby channel showing repeats and additional coverage would be an excellent addition.

agreed.  They could show countless replays and what have you. Just like TVNZ did last World Cup.

I hope they use one of these for their V8 Supercars coverage. I know plenty of people glued to TVNZ Sports Extra over the weekends the races are on. It'll be a shame when TV3 start broadcasting it next year to lose this.
