Ok, so my DVD drive started giving me trouble. If blank media was inserted it gave me a "drive not accessible" message. Then it started doing it with all media. i updated firmware and also the mobo drivers to no availe. In the BIOS it showed that I had a LITEON L18***** whatever, but under My Computer it said CDROM. Click on properties, it said what it was, and no faults found. So as it was 3 months old I rang the supplier and told them, they said send it back and they'd check it out. 3 days later I had a new drive on my doorstep, now a LITEON L20 version. Plugged it in, and ARRGGGH, same problem! What is the likelyhood of it being DOA? what else should I be looking at? Again, BIOS recognises it, but if you double click on the icon with or without a disc in it says "drive inaccessible"
Any ideas?
Regards
Dan

I have seen similar problems with optical drives in HP/COMPAQ machines, all they required was for one registry key to be deleted and they worked fine after that.

It seemed to be caused by a piece of software related to CD/DVD burning.

What software do you use? And what OS?

You are onto it

Usually burning software or emulators/readers from some games take over.

Well, that can cause it to 'disappear' and sometimes your message.

  1. Click Start, then Run, then enter REGEDIT to open the Registry Editor
  2. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control/Class entry
  3. Under the Class entry, double click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  4. In the right-hand pane, click ONCE to select the UpperFilters entry
  5. Make sure the UpperFilters entry is highlighted, press Delete, then Yes.
  6. In the right-hand pane, click ONCE to select the LowerFilters entry
  7. Make sure the LowerFilters entry is highlighted, press Delete, then Yes.
  8. Close the Registry Editor by clicking File, Exit.
Can also be located in currentcontrolset001-003

Then delete the drive from device manager, restart and let it re-apply registry settings less the Gearsec or similar filters that are likely to be there.

I would adjust step two every so slightly.

2. Once regedit is open, select Computer, then goto File, and export, name your back-up something easy to remember, then save it.

Again my dvd drive is playing up. I have applied the regedit as listed above, but made no difference. The problem now is that the PC will only recognize the drive as a CDROM drive, no burning/dvd/dvd burning capabilities in any program whatsoever. This happened after i uninstalled Nero (was a trial version that came with the burner).
Have tried rolling back but made no diff.
Again, thanks in advance for your help aznd suggestions
Dan

Yep. Tried uninstalling, reinstalling, updating drivers, physically unplugging and removing associated files then reinstalling and the regedit method above, all several times over.

Maybe go into Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services and check to see if IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service is running.

Thanks for that. I will advise how I get on. Strangely enough it didn't even occur to me to check microsoft about this problem! I was looking everywhere but. Duhhh.
