Would a NZ TV work in the UK ?   I am thinking no.

It will work, however unless the Tuner will opeate in PAL-I as used in UK and Ireland as opposed to Pal B/G as used here  then it will only work via its AV inputs. The primary difference between PAL I and B/G is the sound carrier is 6MHz rather than 5.5MHz above the video carrier.

There are also issues with moving larger CRT's through the earths magnetic field when going from extreams as NZ and UK, this can render the picture useless if not dealt with.

Thanks Cyril

The TV is only a 14" I will see if it operates in PAL- I.

I lost a perfectly good TV thanks to this phenomenon when I first moved here from the UK back in 2000. Had a lovely little portable widescreen Sony TV (CRT of course, back then), almost brand new, got it here and all the colours were completely screwed - oddly enough it worked perfectly if stood on its end with the screen facing the ceiling, but that made viewing somewhat difficult! At first I thought it must have been dropped during shipping but I later learned about this issue. You live and learn!

Unless you're particularly attached to it I would say you're better off leaving it here. For the price of shipping it, you will probably be able to get a nice little LCD one in the UK. Check out www.dixons.com or www.argos.co.uk for some high-street prices.

Steve98, you should be readily able to have the colour purity issues as a result of moving hemispheres fix 100% or at least to an acceptable image. To correct such purity issues the purity magnets that are placed on the rear of the tube need moving. These are simply glued on in the factory to correct the purity, however it corrects for the magnetic field that exists, any competent TV service tech should be able to move the magnets to suit the existant field. I must warn that its not always possible to remove it totally.

We did look into it at a couple of TV repair places when we first got here. A lot of head-scratching and apprehension to even touch it went on. At the time in NZ there were very few full-size widescreen sets about let alone portable ones, and they seemed to regard it as alien technology! In the end we just bought another one locally. I recently relegated it to the wheelie bin and felt incredibly guilty about it, it was a great little TV. Oh well!
