Hi,

I just bought a new 37" LCD TV and I want to connect my DVD player to it.

I currently have it working off the Composite Video and Audio connectors to the same on the TV.

I would like to connect it using the Y, PB & PR connectors for better picture quality.

However, this does not seem to work. The quality is really bad. It's Black and White and all full of scrolling lines.

The settings on the DVD and TV menus dont seem to help either.

What am I doing wrong?

I just found out from a work mate that i am probably using the wrong type of cable.

I need to get myself a component video cable.

I think i'll go for one of those 1.5m Philips gold-plated ones at DSE for $60.

Yeah you could go and do that if you like to waste money. There are loads of good component cables for much less then that. Or just use 3 composite cables.

You will need to enable the component output on the dvd player, and it seems that there are some braindead TVs out there that only take progressive via the component input, so you may have one of those that mean you need to have a progressive DVD player to work with it..

I would invest in some decent quality Component cables like Monster AV1 for example, for $100, they certainly worth the money, I use them myself & have never looked back.

I would not suggest doing that. Although I agree that you can spend far more then you need to on cables you do at least  want ones that have reasonable plugs and shielding. Composite cables are generally not shielded and have rubbish connectors.

I disagree. I firmly believe that if your gonna spend $3k or so on 40" (or any size really) LCD TV, then it's a very wise idea too also get get quality cabling & it does not have to cost the earth either. As I mentioned, I spent $100 on some Monster AV1 Component cables & compared to composite they are a major step up, if anything I believe that good qaulity cables bring out the best signal possible, whereas cheap & nasty crap does not.
