if i have a 4 ohm sub and a 8-16 ohm home theatre will i be able to use the sub on that home theatre or not

It probably wouldn't be practical seeing as your car sub will be designed for 12V at high ampage.

its probably going to depend on the home theatre.  if the sub has its own amp and adjustable crossover then I would expect so

If it is not a powered sub then don't do it. You will either blow up your amp or you speakers (can't remember if low ohms stresses the amp or the speaker).
